KALEIDOSCOPE by Karina Smigla-Bobinski. From Saturday 11 November at the National Science and Technology Museum of Milano

Thanks to the collaboration with CDP, the Museum's digital art program is enriched to bring young generations closer to STEAM disciplines.

KALEIDOSCOPE by Karina Smigla-Bobinski. From Saturday 11 November at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milano the new interactive art installation that generates color with every touch.

Smigla-Bobinski, an interactive art installation that simulates an infinite palette where every touch generates an ever new combination of shapes and colors.
“We enrich our program dedicated to digital art with motivated enthusiasm with Kaleidoscope, the installation by the intermedial artist Karina Smigla-Bobinski which well translates the declaration placed at the entrance of the Museum, with which we welcome visitors: science is culture. The work, ideal for introducing young generations to STEAM disciplines, merges the creative process with the scientific one, and aims to create awareness of how we perceive the world, starting from its colours", he states Fiorenzo Marco Galli, General Director of the Museum.
Consisting of a light table on which layers of red, green and blue ink float between sheets of PVC, the work invites us to reflect on the perception of color and the interaction between analogue and digital. By manipulating primary colors, you can create new shades of cyan, magenta and yellow.

“When you interact with Kaleidoscope you play with your mind. This work concerns electromagnetic waves and the way in which they pass through those two small holes that are our eyes”, clarifies Karina Smigla-Bobinski.

The installation therefore comes to life thanks to the action of the participants, who create surprising visual landscapes, through vibrant chromatic games.

“We are very happy with the presence of Karina Smigla-Bobinski at the Museum because both her thoughts and her work Kaleidoscope are the perfect expression of our educational thinking: steal combining art and science, cognitive exploration and emotion, all in a rich and enchanting experience that helps you understand the world around you. For us, art is a powerful educational tool, with its infinite possibilities to involve everyone and help open the “black box” of science and technology by breaking down fears and barriers,” he explains Maria Xanthoudaki, Education Director of the Museum. Due to its possibility of direct and intuitive interaction, Kaleidoscope is accessible to everyone, going beyond the idea of artistic experience as passive consumption, and puts personal expression as collective action at the centre.

“Il National Science and Technology Museum embodies with its activity the highest concept of museum, because in addition to preserving the memory of the results achieved by science over the centuries, from Leonardo da Vinci onwards, it stimulates and welcomes research that straddles art, science and experience. The installation which is inaugurated today, in fact, starting from a profound scientific knowledge, is able to offer an engaging and fascinating artistic experience, demonstrating how the boundaries between art and science have always been almost imperceptible“, adds Tommaso Sacchi, Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Milano.

The installation is hosted by the Museum thanks to the collaboration with Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, whose contribution is aimed at encouraging the diffusion of scientific culture among young people, promoting the STEAM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and thematic Ma) with impacts positive for the economy and society. The work is part of Digital Aesthetics, the Museum's permanent program of digital art installations that reflects on new expressive languages and explores the connections between research, technological innovations and artistic creative processes.
