Chioggia, already a "City that Reads" recognized by the Book Center, is a candidate for Italian Book Capital 2025.
“Chioggia, with its valuable literary production, recognized by Cepell Book and Reading Center “City that reads” since 2020, treasure chest of beauties of the upper Adriatic, it has all it takes to compete for the title of Italian Book Capital 2025. Chioggia's nomination is not only an opportunity to promote culture, but also to relaunch the local economy, strengthen the sense of community, and consolidate the prestige of Chioggia and the Veneto at a national and international level. The candidacy is an opportunity for discovery and renewal but above all a formidable tool for social inclusion and the fight against educational poverty. I thank Mayor Mauro Armelao and Councilor for Culture Elena Zennaro for their commitment to this project that has been carried out with passion and foresight. Good luck for this first important stage”.
This is the comment of the Councillor for Culture of the Veneto Region, Cristiano Corazzari, following the announcement by the Ministry of Culture that Chioggia is the only Veneto municipality among the 20 cities candidate for the title of Italian Book Capital 2025. The new capital will be identified by a jury composed of 5 independent, well-known experts in the culture and publishing sector, which will identify from one to 10 finalist projects. By November 30, 2024, the jury will submit to the Minister of Culture the project of the city proposed to become the Italian Capital of Books 2025. The winning city will be awarded a contribution of 500 thousand euros from the Ministry of Culture.
“Increasingly a protagonist in the international press, finalist for the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2024 and second place in the Venetian City for Culture 2024, Chioggia boasts a centuries-old history of the highest value, in which the environmental dimension is intertwined with the cultural one”, continues councilor Corazzari. “It is the implementing city of the Pact for Reading, which has been joined so far by a multitude of public and private entities, in a region, Veneto, which has more local reading pacts at a national level (of the 728 reading pacts in Italy, 93 are in Veneto). A region that also recorded the record success of “Il Veneto legge”, the reading marathon conceived and promoted by the Department of Culture of the Veneto Region. I hope that the unique characteristics of Chioggia can be decisive in the evaluations of the jury and subsequently of the ministerial commission and bring to Veneto a coveted recognition, making reading and culture in general a driving force for tourism, economy and environment. It is a project that looks to the future, capable of leaving a lasting legacy in the cultural and social fabric of the city”, concludes Corazzari.
