Urban regeneration: Municipality of Milano and State University, a pact for the valorization of Città Studi.

New impetus to reorganization and redevelopment of Città Studi. With a resolution approved by the municipal council, the City of Milano defines the guidelines of the Memorandum of Understanding with theState University of Milano, having as its object the definition of mutual commitments for the implementation of the project valorisation of Città Studi as a hub for university services and the right to study, tertiary education, research and innovation. The approval by the Council will be followed today by the favorable vote of the University Board of Directors. Placing itself within the framework of reorganization of the University, and in connection with the transformations taking place in the district MIND by Milano – where the construction of the new Campus will begin within the year which will welcome over 20 thousand people including 18 thousand students – the protocol provides for the definition of a property reuse plan no longer functional to university needs, the maintenance and enhancement of the same properties within Città Studi and the support for right to education measures, through the creation of structures intended for residences for students and teachers. An operation to which the Municipality grants the existence of the public interest.

The neighborhood redevelopment project envisages a scenario consistent with the objectives of the municipal administration, and of the State University itself, of guaranteeing the maintenance of its university vocation. For the part of Città Studi affected by the current activities of the State University (on owned properties or state concessions), the future layout of the surfaces will see the preservation of university functions for 75%, and for the rest mostly the destination for other urban functions, always connected to the university context. In particular, the properties whose services will be transferred to MIND and which will be repurposed are located in via Golgi, Venezian, Pascal, Colombo, Vanvitelli, Balzaretti, Trentacoste, Noto, Ortles.

The University therefore confirms its intention to maintain a strong presence in Città Studi, the first historic scientific nucleus of the University, in firm coherence with the perspective of multipolar development, at the center of all its multi-year plans. The protocol draws up a plan for the reuse of the properties that currently host the activities that will be reorganized at MIND which includes thethe establishment of teaching facilities, libraries, research laboratories, places of innovation and university residences, thus giving shape to a real knowledge hub. All this in addition to the humanistic campus of the State University, which, as is known, will bring educational and scientific activities relating to the historical-artistic fields, linguistic and cultural mediation and part of the social and political fields to Città Studi.

The neighbourhood, the first historical nucleus of the State University, is and will remain a fundamental asset in the life of our university and in the reorganization project in which we are engaged, which brings value to different urban areas, integrating new locations, functions and activities according to a multipolar scheme" .
