Today, 10 April 2021, marks the 169th anniversary of the foundation of the State Police. Years full of changes, which are remembered on April 10th, the day in 1981 Law 121 was published in the Official Journal which, as highlighted by the words of the Chief of Police Prefect Lamberto Giannini “it carried within itself the seed of great evolutions, redesigning a modern police force with a strong civil identity”.
For the second consecutive year, the epidemiological emergency requires maximum sobriety in celebrations. Yesterday morning of April 9th the Chief of Police - Director General of Public Security Prefect Lamberto Giannini was received at the Quirinale Palace by the President of the Republic, accompanied by the Deputy Chiefs of Police, the Central Directors of the Department of Public Security and a representative of the staff.
Precisely to seal this Anniversary, the Guard of Honor service at the Quirinal Palace is today entrusted to the Department of State Police on horseback, which for the occasion will wear the historical uniform of the Risorgimento.
This morning, the Minister of the Interior Luciana Lamorgese accompanied by the Chief of Police, places a laurel wreath at the Shrine of the Fallen at the Higher Police School.
Subsequently in the school square, after the review of the deployment and the reading of the message from the President of the Republic, the Minister of the Interior presents the gold medal for civil merit, awarded by the President of the Republic, to the Flag of the State Police.
The prestigious recognition was awarded for the task carried out by the Quaestors, provincial public security authorities responsible for the technical-operational coordination of public order and security services, with the following motivation: "Heir to a prestigious tradition dating back to before the Unification of Italy, the State Police, with absolute loyalty to the State and in defense of the community, has ensured, for one hundred and sixty-nine years, the maintenance of public order and security by acting as interpreter on the territory of the high magisterium entrusted to the provincial public security authorities responsible for coordination operational technician of public order and safety services. Through its women and men, called to carry out this difficult and essential task, the State Police, in even the most dramatic phases of the country's history, has contributed decisively to the cohesion of the Nation and has guaranteed, since the birth of the Republic , the protection of fundamental freedoms, the salvation of democratic institutions, also ensuring the conditions for progress and collective and individual well-being."
The awarding of the gold medal crowns a delicate work carried out over a long period of time that has seen a profound change in the sensitivities and the social and cultural context, up to our days characterized by the need to reconcile the full exercise of rights and freedoms. fundamentals provided by our Republican Constitution, with the exceptional conditions imposed by the pandemic.
