This morning thebear Kj1, an action announced by the Province of Trento. President Maurizio Fugatti signed a decree for his killing, revoking two previous orders suspended by the TAR. Kj1 was responsible for an attack on a Frenchman on July 16 and at least seven interactions with the man, classified as dangerous by Pacobace and Ispra.
Outrage from animal rights associations
The animal rights associations immediately protested, unsuccessfully presenting a request for precautionary measures. Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of the Environment, criticized the decision, arguing that the suppression of bears does not solve the problem, caused by a wrong tourist choice 25 years ago. He suggested sterilization as a possible solution, if accompanied by information and new actions.
Harsh criticism from M5S and ENPA, LAV, LEIDAA and OIPA
The bear, traceable via radio collar, was captured and released on July 23. Criticism also came from the M5s, with Sergio Costa calling the killing cruel and unfair, endangering all Trentino bears.
The environmentalists, led by Michela Vittoria Brambilla, expressed indignation at the nocturnal killing of Kj1, accusing Fugatti of evading administrative justice. Enpa, Lav, Leidaa and Oipa challenged the decree and requested access to the Ispra documents, considering the investigation into the Dro accident to be incomplete.
