Teramo: They pretend to be Carabinieri and defraud a woman: The danger of spoofing.
TERAMO – A 64-year-old teacher reported to the Carabinieri of Teramo that I received a phone call from a user number 086124981 (similar to the one certified at the CC Operations Centre) through which the interlocutor, qualifying himself as an Army Officer, informed her that a leak of sensitive data had occurred from the servers of the credit institution where the victim is a current account holder and that shortly thereafter she would be contacted by a person in charge of the service bank anti-fraud.
Shortly afterwards the victim was contacted, with another mobile user, by the self-styled person in charge of the banking institution, who told her that she would have to make a instant bank transfer of 11.000,00 Euros in favor of an Iban indicated by him and then went to the barracks, where the Carabinieri officer who had previously called her was waiting for her.
Unfortunately, the unfortunate woman agreed to this request and, only after showing up at the barracks, did she realize that she had been victim of a scam, specifically in a case of spoofing expected that no policeman had contacted him from the barracks switchboard.
“Spoofing” is a particular type of attack that allows an attacker to hide their identity to appear “reliable” to the victim designated and thus gain access to confidential information and sensitive data. In the case in question, the criminals managed to reveal the real telephone number of the Teramo Carabinieri Station.
Here because it is increasingly necessary to pay attention to anyone who tries in some way to steal our data, in particular, those attributable to current accounts, credit cards and the like.
The Carabinieri, in the sense, reiterate that no one can lawfully ask for such information, especially by telephone, so it is important, in case you have received a dubious phone call, contact 112 immediately to report the incident.
In this regard, we inform you that a similar type of crime was committed last 16 June against a woman from Roseto degli Abruzzi who, however, did not fall into the trap.
Finally, it is added that the Carabinieri, at a national level, has strengthened the information campaign against scams, enlisting a special testimonial for the particular mission: Lino Banfi.
