Spain, joint operation by the State Police and the Policia Nacional: three Neapolitan fugitives linked to the Camorra arrested.
In an unprecedented joint operation, the Italian State Police, in close collaboration with the Unidad de Droga y Crimen Organizado (UDYCO) of the Spanish Policia Nacional, arrested three dangerous fugitives from Naples in Marbella, Spain. The operation, which involved the Naples Flying Squad and the Central Operations Service (SCO), was successful in less than 24 hours, targeting leading figures in organized crime.
The three arrested, all related by kinship, are Stanislao Marigliano (67 years old), Michele Sannino (48 years old) and Ciro Marigliano (24 years old). The first two are respectively the father-in-law and grandfather of the youngest, Ciro Marigliano, and are members of the Formicola-Marigliano clan, one of the most fearsome Camorra organizations in the eastern area of Naples.
The capture of the fugitives
The operations began yesterday evening, when Ciro Marigliano was arrested in Marbella after a long tailing, while he was with his wife. The capture of Marigliano allowed the investigation to continue, leading a few hours later to the arrest of Stanislao Marigliano and Michele Sannino. The latter, in addition to being wanted for international trafficking of foreign manufactured tobacco, had escaped previous orders of precautionary custody in prison for drug trafficking and self-laundering.
The investigations, conducted by the Naples Flying Squad in coordination with the District Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office, had allowed them to trace the residential complex where the fugitives had taken refuge. The Policia Nacional, with the support of the Italian Police's operational office, then carried out the blitz that led to the arrests.
Crimes and European Arrest Warrants
The three arrested were recipients of European Arrest Warrants (EAW) issued by the Italian judicial authorities. Stanislao Marigliano had been wanted since April 2024, definitively convicted of aggravated mafia-style receiving of stolen goods, with a sentence of 5 years and 8 months. Michele Sannino, wanted since May 2023, was convicted of smuggling foreign manufactured tobacco, but had also ignored two precautionary custody orders for drug trafficking and self-laundering crimes. Ciro Marigliano, on the other hand, had been wanted since July 2024 for the attempted murder of a criminal in Naples in 2023, a crime believed to have been committed together with his father Stanislao.
The Formicola-Marigliano clan, to which the three arrested belong, is known for its illicit activities related to drug trafficking, extortion and money laundering. Stanislao Marigliano, in particular, is married to Concetta Formicola, sister of Gaetano, Bernardo and Ciro, historical leaders of the clan, of which the first two were killed in Camorra ambushes, while Ciro is currently serving a life sentence.
International collaboration
The success of the operation is the result of intense and fruitful cooperation between the Italian State Police and the Spanish police forces. The synergy between the police forces made it possible to locate the fugitives in a short period of time, demonstrating the effectiveness of international coordination in the fight against organized crime. In particular, the Central Operations Service of the Italian Police and the UDYCO of the Policia Nacional worked closely together to gather crucial information and plan the arrest operations.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi expressed his appreciation for the operation, underlining the importance of international cooperation in fighting crime. “The arrest of three dangerous fugitives represents a significant blow to organized crime. It is the result of careful investigative activity and extraordinary collaboration between the State Police and the Policia Nacional,” Piantedosi said. “This result confirms the Italian government’s constant commitment to ensuring security and legality, also through the strengthening of joint operations at European level.”
The arrest of the three Neapolitan fugitives in Spain is an important success in the fight against organized crime, and a clear message of commitment by Italian and international authorities to combat crime. Investigations continue, and it is expected that new developments may emerge, with the hope that other similar operations may contribute to further dismantling criminal organizations present on European soil.
