Shipwreck off the coast of Libya: the bodies of 11 migrants recovered.

The bodies of 11 migrants were spotted at off Libya from the plane Seabird, Seawatch, and were then recovered by Geo Barents ship, Doctors without borders, who was in the area after having rescued two boats.

Geo Barents was awarded the port of Genoa, more than 600 nautical miles from the site of the intervention, where it is now heading, with 165 people and 11 bodies on board.

The 11 bodies will be landed in Lampedusa. The Ministry of the Interior authorized the disembarkation of the bodies. In a few hours, a patrol boat from the Lampedusa Coast Guard will be used for transhipment: the ship is in fact too large to be able to moor at the port of the largest island of the Pelagie. After the transshipment of the corpses, Geo Barents, will continue to the assigned safe port of Genoa.

The circumstance of the landing of the bodies provoked the reaction of the island's Coast Guard and the Agrigento Public Prosecutor's Office, who highlighted critical issues linked to the inadequacy of the Lampedusa structures to accommodate the bodies and the mayor's protest.

«I don't understand with what logic it was decided to disembark the bodies in Lampedusa, when the conditions of our mortuary and more generally the logistical conditions of my territory are known to the whole world. I hope that the relevant authorities will repent of this decision", declared the mayor of Lampedusa and Linosa, Philip Mannino what they say «tired and embittered by continually receiving deaths. Just as I am tired of having to remember at every opportunity that we are an island and have the problems of a border land - has explained -.  Problems that do not only concern the bodies, but more generally the functioning of the entire administrative machine that I have represented on numerous institutional occasions. These dead, just today, day on which the polls are called for the elections, they seem - he concludes - having wanted to give a slap in the face to a Europe that for too long has pretended not to see and not understand that the problem can no longer be postponed".

Despite everything, however, the bodies should have landed on the island's Favaloro pier. Once disembarked in Lampedusa, the bodies should be transferred between this evening and tomorrow morning at the latest, with the scheduled ferry, to Porto Empedocle. The prefect Filippo Romano, in these hours, has asked the mayors of Agrigento to find the necessary places for burials. If the spaces in the cemeteries of Agrigento are not enough, they are also asking the mayors of Trapani, Caltanissetta and Enna.
