Sailboat with migrants capsizes off the coast of Calabria: at least 66 missing, including 26 children.
I am at least 66 migrants are missing due to the capsizing, about one hundred miles from the coast of Calabriaand sailboat on which they travelled.
A merchant ship came to the rescue of the vessel and subsequently transferred the 12 survivors – including a pregnant woman – on a unit of the Coast Guard which then landed in Roccella Ionica (RC).
«I spoke to a guy who lost his girlfriend. Survivors spoke of 66 people missing, including at least 26 children, even a few months old. Entire families in Afghanistan would have died. They left Turkey 8 days ago and had been taking on water for 3 or 4 days. They told us that they were traveling without life jackets and that some boats did not stop to help them". So Shakilla Mohammadi, intercultural mediator of Doctors without borders, present in Roccella Ionica, where the survivors of the shipwreck in the Ionian Sea disembarked.
"The scene - he says Mohammadi - it was heartbreaking, traumatized people in front of us, the pain was tangible".
The body of a woman who died after falling into the sea also arrived in port. They were activate searches for missing people, but, at the moment, none have been recovered.
