Rome. Baggage thefts, robberies, resisting a public official: the results of the “High Impact” control operations of the Railway Police.
In recent weeks, as part of the checks aimed at increasing the level of safety in the railway sector, staff of the Rome Police Headquarters and the Railway Police, in the internal and external area of Rome Termini station, they identified 1.144 people, checked dozens of bags and various commercial establishments.
The police officers of the Railway Police Subsection of Rome Tiburtina, during the usual prevention and repression checks within the railway yard, arrested a person, with a police record, as he was seriously suspected of the crime of theft by tearing of a gold chain worth 1.000 Euros against an Italian citizen. In particular, the agents, together with Italian Army personnel near Piazza Ipogea, were alerted by the screams of a man who indicated a person who was running away after having stolen something from him. He was immediately reached, stopped and accompanied to the police station Polfer offices where, following a search, he was found in possession of the gold necklace removed shortly before and which the victim recognized as being his property. The stolen goods were immediately returned to the person entitled to the complaint.
The officers of the Compartmental Judicial Police Squad reported 4 people at large for the crime of resisting a public official and refusing to provide personal information. In particular, the officers, while carrying out their usual checks within the Roma Termini railway area, noticed two individuals who were wandering around, with an obviously suspicious attitude, inside a commercial establishment located in the station. The two, after a few minutes, reunited with two other people, one of whom had a paper bag in tow and they all sat down together at a table in a bar; the officers, suspicious, found that the paper bag in the possession of one of the four individuals was "shielded", that is, inside it contained another bag wrapped in aluminum foil for food, a ploy used by "shoplifters" to evade the electronic controls placed on the goods with anti-theft plates.
When asked to show identity documents, the subjects clearly refused and behaved in a provocative and intolerant way towards police checks; therefore, they were accompanied to the Polfer offices, where they continued to struggle in the hope of escaping the officers' grasp, but failing in their aim. The 4 were found to have no identification documents and, after regular checks, they were accompanied to the Immigration Office of the Rome Police Headquarters to verify their position on the national territory.
The agents of the Polfer Department for Lazio carried out an escort service to go to the city of Padua, in order to return the "jewels" to an elderly lady because, on 10 June last, personnel of the Compartmental Judicial Police Team, in collaboration with personnel from the Flying Squad of the Padua Police Headquarters reported a person, while an accomplice is still wanted because he is believed to have committed the scam against the woman. Specifically, the two accomplices carried out the classic "accident scam" by contacting the chosen victim and, after identifying themselves as Carabinieri, informed her that her brother had run over a person and that she was currently hospitalized in serious conditions. To avoid worse consequences for her brother, the woman had to pay a large sum but, when the woman refused due to lack of availability, they agreed with her to collect some jewelry from the house shortly after, through personnel from the Court who, in fact, a few moments after the phone call, rang the doorbell and received what was available in the house and then disappeared.
Once she regained her lucidity, the woman contacted the Flying Squad of the Padua Police Headquarters who, following the immediate investigation, managed to ascertain the presence of the two perpetrators of the scam, on board the AV 9431 train departing from the Padua FS station and headed for Rome. In fact, when the train arrived on the platform at the Roma Termini railway station, the police immediately identified one of the two who, taken to the office for the search, was found in possession of the woman's jewelry, hidden in his backpack, which were subsequently evaluated to have a value of approximately 40 thousand euros. Last week, the staff of the Rome Termini Station Department, during the prevention and repression checks of crimes in the railway sector, arrested 1 person for the crimes of rapine, resistance and injuries to a public official.
The officers of the Compartmental Judicial Police Squad, instead, while carrying out the usual services aimed at countering criminal activity inside the Roma Termini station, arrested 1 person, responsible for the crime of flagrant aggravated theft of a piece of luggage, perpetrated inside a commercial establishment located in the Roma Termini railway station, to the detriment of an Italian tourist. Finally, on the afternoon of July 9, the men of the Subsection of the Railway Police of Rome Tiburtina, they arrested 1 person inside the railway station and in the same afternoon the police officers of the Polfer Department of Rome Termini, instead, arrested 1 person for the crime of resisting and injuring a public official.
In any case, all the suspects are to be considered presumed innocent, in consideration of the current phase of the proceedings, i.e. that of the preliminary investigations, until a definitive finding of guilt with an irrevocable sentence.
