In Messina, the Carabinieri of the NAS of Catania and the Messina Centro Company carried out the seizure decree, issued by the GIP of the Court of Messina, upon request of the local Public Prosecutor's Office, of two operating rooms of the Cardiac Surgery Department of the “Papardo” Hospital.
The measure arises from the investigations conducted, on behalf of the Judicial Authority, by the Carabinieri, following complaints filed last September by relatives of some patients which, subjected to cardiac surgery intervention at the hospital, they were died a few days after the operation due to typically hospital infections.
In particular, the checks, carried out also with the support of technical consultants, revealed that the deaths reported were part of a larger number of similar cases that occurred in the aforementioned health department, to the detriment of patients undergoing various types of surgery, who had heart valves or coronary bypasses installed.
Following the checks carried out, the following were also numerous critical issues were identified in terms of healthiness of the operating environments, with the exceeding of the significant thresholds for the presence of pathogens and other microorganisms.
