In recent days, the Carabinieri of the Messina Tremestieri Station and of the local Radiomobile Unit, with the technical support of the military of the CITES Unit of Catania, a department of the Carabinieri Forestali responsible for the protection of the environment and fauna, with particular reference to the fight against the trafficking of protected species, They reported a 50-year-old, already known to the police, as he was presumed responsible for the crimes of "hunting with prohibited means", "receiving stolen goods" and "animal cruelty".

It was a phone call to 112 that alerted the Carabinieri, who then carried out an intervention in the Santa Lucia neighbourhood above Contesse, where the presence of bird traps had been reported. In the reported location, located in a rural area, the military found three small birds locked in narrow cages placed on wooden poles, as well as two nets specially equipped for capturing birds, inside which were entangled two goldfinches, used as "lures", that is, birds that, with their song, serve as a lure for other birds to hunt, with an iron harness that causes great suffering to the animal.

Having ascertained that the material found was attributable to a poaching activity, the investigations developed immediately by the Carabinieri of the Messina Tremestieri Station, together with the Carabinieri of the CITES Unit of Catania, allowed to trace the presumed responsible, identified as the 50-year-old, on whose car the Carabinieri found and seized further material used for the capture of birds.

On site, the military of the Arma also requested the intervention of the Veterinary personnel of the ASP of Messina who, after the preliminary checks and following the foreseen procedures, removed the snap hooks of the birds trapped in the nets and, once the health status of all the birds had been assessed, gave the go-ahead for their release.
TAll the material was seized and the 50-year-old will now have to answer for the crimes he is accused of.
