Messina, inauguration of "Iginia": the new RFI ship that takes you to Villa San Giovanni.
In the presence of the Minister of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility Enrico Giovannini, welcomed by the Extraordinary Commissioner of the City of Messina Leonardo Santoro, by the Vice President of the Sicilian Region Gaetano Armao, by the Prefect of Messina Cosima Di Stani and by the President of the Port System Authority Mario Paolo Mega, the new ship of the Italian Railway Network (FS Italiane Group) was inaugurated this morning in the port of Messina, Iginia, which will be operational from tomorrow, Tuesday 8, and will offer services for the transport of trains, passengers and goods in the Strait between Messina and Villa San Giovanni.
The event was attended by civil, military and religious authorities, RFI CEO and DG Vera Fiorani and RFI Navigation Director Giuseppe Marta. The Iginia ship, built by the Temporary Business Association, composed of the agent T. Mariotti SpA and the principal Officine Meccaniche Navali e Fonderie San Giorgio del Porto SpA, is the result of an economic investment of 57 million euros, 7 of which funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) for Green technology.
The Minister, during his speech, highlighted the commitment of the Government and RFI to "ensure and improve territorial continuity between the two banks of the Strait, pursuing an ecological transaction objective and a reduction in emissions thanks to green technology which the ship is equipped with".
Commissioner Santoro, in welcoming Minister Giovannini, underlined that: “The ship, inaugurated today in the oldest port in the Mediterranean, represents another point of connection between the city of Messina and the other side of the Strait. Messina, in the wake of its maritime tradition, has equipped and expert crews who will be able to tackle navigation with experience and competence. With the inauguration of this ship, the connection service between the two banks is strengthened and therefore a further mending in terms of efficiency in the division of the Strait, awaiting the definitive solution".
