Maxi Operation against online child pornography throughout Italy: 33 searches in the Police Operation “La Croix”.

The State Police engaged throughout Italy, with the coordination of the Postal Police Service and Cyber Security, in the execution of 33 search warrants delegated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Turin as part of the operation to combat online child pornography "La Croix".

Following the investigative activities initiated by the Cyber Security Operations Center of Turin, for over 6 months also carried out in undercover mode, in close coordination with the competent Judicial Authority, numerous individuals have been identified as being involved in the dissemination and publicity of material created through the exploitation of minors online.

Particularly The investigation focused on the activity of a user who, however, interested in Procurement of child pornography material, published in restricted groups information and computer traces captured during interactions with other virtual identities, in fact playing the unlikely role of “vigilante”.

Users involved in the exchange of child pornography material, thanks to the respect of technical measures aimed at maintaining anonymity, they had access to illicit content of various kinds, sometimes even depicting actual sexual violence, and “chatted” very discreetly to test mutual interest in the issues of sexual abuse, using “coded” language.

The widespread investigation activity was determined by the fundamental accreditation within the network of contacts of the unknown vigilante; subsequently, once the computer data exposed on the net on the subjects of interest have been obtained, the investigations conducted by cyber investigators have enhanced all the computer traces exposed for the identification of the 33 users involved, effectively rewinding the history of their main contact's online interactions.

In the strictly operational phase, the equivalent Postal Police Offices of Rome were involved, Milano, Naples, Reggio Calabria, Cagliari, Palermo, Catania, Bari, Venice and Trieste, who took care of the joint execution of the provisions issued by the Judicial Authority.

It is also emphasized that the suspects have different ages, employment status, geographical location: professionals, workers, students. Among those arrested, residents respectively in Milan, Cagliari and Benevento, there are a member of the police force and a prelate.

The finding of cases of possession of material by young people and very young people also confirms the risky approach of the new generations to the subject, certainly favored by the technological evolution in the use of peer to peer platforms, such as the one under investigation; hence the commitment of the Postal Police in terms of prevention with respect to those forms of dependence on the use of the smartphone in carrying out this type of research of material, sometimes even cruel by users, which sees a total depersonalization of the primary victim of exploitation.

In the investigation, personal, local and computer system searches, issued by the District Attorney's Office of Turin, led to the seizure of cell phones, tablets, hard disks, pen drives, computers and email accounts and social profiles. During the searches, the accounts used by the suspects to request child pornography material were also found, and in some cases a large quantity of illicit material stored on the seized computer media, which will be the subject of subsequent investigations, considering that the proceedings are in the preliminary investigation stage and the suspects must be considered not guilty until any judicial measures against them become final.

The delicate work of the Postal Police in the fight against online child pornography is also a photographic exhibition, entitled “Superheroes”, a project that aims to highlight the emotional aspect connected to the commitment of operators, even undercover, in the "black web" and of minors who are victims of online grooming and abuse.

The photographic exhibition, of an itinerant nature, starting from Rome - where it was exhibited until yesterday, October 12th at the Galleria Alberto Sordi - will arrive throughout Italy thanks to the support of the Operations Centers for Cyber Security of the Postal Police.

The initiative, conceived and implemented by Postal Police officers serving at the Operations Center for Cyber Security in Lombardy, received the support of Terre des Hommes Italia, Coriandoli per Shanti Bhavan Onlus and Enel.
