Lampedusa: two citizens of Sudan and South Sudan under investigation for having brought 15 migrants to Italy from Libya on board a wooden boat
The events occurred on the night of August 01st when, in international waters, approximately 24 nautical miles south of Lampedusa, the Coast Guard intercepted the drifting wooden boat with 17 migrants on board.

This morning the State Police executed 2 arrest warrants issued by the Agrigento Public Prosecutor's Office against 2 citizens originally from Sudan and South Sudan who landed in Lampedusa on August 02. The aforementioned are considered responsible for the crime referred to in art. 12 of Legislative Decree 286/98 because, in collaboration with each other and with other currently unidentified individuals resident in Libya, in violation of the provisions contained in the same legislative decree, they allegedly carried out acts aimed at illegally procuring the entry into the national territory of 15 migrants, mainly originating from Bangladesh. The two suspects they led and governed, charting the course, a wooden boat having a length of approximately seven meters without the fuel necessary to reach its destination, thus exposing people to danger to their lives or safety.

The investigation activity conducted at the Lampedusa Hotspot by the SCO, the SISCO of Palermo and the Flying Squad of Agrigento, through the hearing of all the migrants who landed made it possible to reconstruct the phases of the sea crossing from the Libyan to the Italian coasts.
In particular, the elements acquired during the investigationand they brought to light that the two suspects, during the boarding phases along the coast of Zawiya, remained detached from the rest of the migrants who then undertook the journey, since, according to the statements obtained, the two Sudanese were busy speaking with the Libyan organizers of the crossing, from whom they received directions for the journey, a compass and a satellite phone to plot the route towards the Italian coasts.
The arrest warrants issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Agrigento were executed this morning and The suspects were sent to prison, awaiting the validation hearing.
