Irregularities discovered by the NAS in Sardinia: a coffee roastery and a farmhouse closed.

As part of the food supply chain control services carried out recently, i Carabinieri of the Anti-adulteration and Healthcare Unit of Sassari, in collaboration with personnel from the competent local health authorities, have suspended, in the province of Sassari, a production plant operating in the coffee roasting sector and, in the Oristano area, a farmhouse.

In particular, during the first check they were found “non-compliance in risk management procedures – we read in the ordinance – attributable to the coffee processing activity, referring to the process in which the coffee grain undergoes transformations (such as the caramelization of sugars and the carbonization of cellulose) which give the bean its typical color, as well as the formation of volatile compounds (which give it the typical aroma of roasted coffee)”.

They were also detected deficiencies in safety certifications relating to the fume emission system and the underground fuel tank. Following the inspection, the owner was charged with administrative sanctions for an amount of approximately 2 thousand euros and ordered the immediate closure of the coffee processing activity until the irregularities detected were resolved.

With reference instead to the control carried out in the province of Oristano, were found serious hygienic-sanitary and structural criticalities both the premises and the equipment used for food processing and storage, "as well as in the methods of conservation and ability to trace the products, mainly of animal origin (pork, sheep and dairy products) for which the company managers have not been able to demonstrate their origin or provenance".

Approximately 700 kg of food and 650 liters of oil were seized. Of note is the serious risk to food safety and consumer health caused by the water supply, "resulting coming exclusively from aqueduct for agricultural use, whose waters were found to lack the chemical, physical and biological characteristics that could be considered drinkable".

After the inspection, the owner was charged with administrative sanctions for an amount of approximately 4 euros and the Health Authority ordered the immediate closure of the business.
