Grumo Appula: 29-year-old man arrested after escaping from Lecce prison on September 14

The Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit of the Provincial Command of Taranto, with the technical support of the Carabinieri Special Operations Group, as well as with the collaboration, in the executive phase, of the Puglia Carabinieri Hunters Helicopter Squadron, of the 6th Carabinieri Helicopter Unit of Bari Palese and with the assistance of the military of the Bari Provincial Command, as well as of the Central Investigative Unit of the Penitentiary Police of the Apulian capital, today, have a 29-year-old man arrested, escaped from Lecce prison on September 14th.

The service operation was possible thanks to an incessant information-investigative activity, started the day after the escape from the prison of Lecce, a structure in which the arrested person should have remained, to serve a prison sentence, up to the 2028.

The man, presumably taking advantage of being temporarily at the prison infirmary, eluded the controls by climbing over the surrounding gate and the various fences present, temporarily disappearing.

The 29-year-old was then tracked down yesterday, September 24, near Grumo Appula, in the province of Bari, in the open countryside. Together with his wife, he would have hidden inside a very isolated farmhouse, in order to elude any possible controls.

The operation, which lasted from dawn until the evening, was attended by over 50 military personnel of the Arma, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Offices of Lecce and Bari. Inside the building, thanks to a thorough search, approximately 50 grams of hashishas well as a microcellular, presumably used for communications needed to gain escape.

At the end of the formal procedures, without prejudice to the presumption of innocence until a final conviction, the arrested person was taken to the Taranto District Prison, at the disposal of the Judicial Authority.
