Gender-based violence: femicides down, reports up. Police Chief warnings almost double in 2024
Today, at the Central Criminal Police Directorate, joint office of the Department of Public Security, was presented report of analysis “March 8 – International Women’s Day”, elaborated by Criminal Analysis Service, which examines, through the processing of the elements acquired from the Police Forces Database, the issue of gender violence and the related counteraction.
In 2024 The murders with female victims were 113, 99 of which in family/love environment; of these women, 61 were killed by their partner/ex-partner.
These figures, among the lowest in the last decade, testify to the strong commitment of society to raise awareness of the phenomenon and, in particular, of the Police Forces for their careful and constant prevention activity.
The attention that women and men in uniform devote to fighting this hateful phenomenon is demonstrated by the constant increase in measures adopted to prevent possible crimes and guarantee safety to victims of violence: in 2024 I'm almost Warnings from the Police Chief doubled (+94%) and more than Abuser's removals tripled from the family home (+224%).
The trend of "sentinel crimes”, although constantly increasing, could testify to the result of a growing awareness of victims, who report more than before, trusting in the work of the Institutions, thanks also to the introduction of legislative measures aimed at guaranteeing them greater protection and support.
This and much more is the content of the Report in word which, achieved through the study and analysis of the data acquired by the Police Force Database, compared with the information provided by the territorial offices of State Police ed Arms of the Carabinieri, offers a detailed reconstruction of the gender violence in the period 2019 – 2024, focusing on the two-year period 2023-2024, with insights focused on the age and nationality of the victims and on the relationships with the perpetrators, as well as on other aspects characterising the main crimes, including the so-called “sentinel crimes” which, often already an integral part of gender violence, can constitute an alarm bell.
The document then contains insights on genital mutilation and witnessed violence. There are also some stories featuring women victims of gender violence, whose stories, although inspired by real events, are intentionally made anonymous and fictionalized, but reflect the phenomenon and bear witness to it.
In appendix, finally, for a greater awareness of the phenomenon and a greater adherence to the territory, the following are reported data from the last three years, broken down at provincial level, relating to some of the criminal offences examined.
