Florence, “No hot water in prison? It’s not a hotel”: the Prisoners’ Guarantor intervenes.
Il Guarantor of prisoners intervenes after a few complaints that they report poor hygienic conditions e no hot water in prison.
Investigations will be initiated on some answers of the supervisory judiciary, who rejected appeals for early release, discount or compensation for damages presented by various prisoners in the Sollicciano penal institute in Florence, precisely because of the degraded condition of the structure.
The Guarantor focuses on the order in which one of the appeals presented by a prisoner is rejected which reads: “With reference to the lack of hot water in the sink located inside the detention rooms, this magistrate believes that hot water in the cell is not an essential right guaranteed to the prisoner, but a supply that can only be expected in hotel facilities ”.
The Guarantor has announced that it will also start investigations into another order of the surveillance judge in which the magistrate rejects the request for early release of a prisoner from the Florence prison, who in the past he had attempted suicide. The reason would be that “the attempt to take one's life by hanging is incompatible with the prerequisite of early release, which is participation in educational work”.
There are hundreds of appeals presented by inmates in the Florence prison: they talk about unacceptable conditions, following which sentence reductions are requested.
Just on July 5th there was one revolt in Sollicciano prison, followed by those in the institutes of Viterbo, Trento, Vercelli and Brissogne: four violent protests in the last week, with Burnt mattresses, devastation and some injured officers.
