Extensive environmental controls throughout the Gioia Tauro plain: 11 entrepreneurs reported.

Reggio Calabria. Powerful campaign of environmental controls throughout the country Plain of Gioia Tauro, where the Carabinieri of Gioia Tauro conducted a coordinated service aimed at prevention of the local ecosystem, coinciding with the period of olive pressing and oil production. In particular, they were checked over 15 agricultural companies who manage oil mills in the municipalities of Molochio, San Giorgio Morgeto, Varapodio, Taurianova and Cittanova, finding general compliance with sector regulations.

However, the military did not limit itself to checks inside the factories, but they also extended the controls to agricultural land and neighboring waterways. Precisely during one of these investigations, in particular, the carabinieri of the San Giorgio Morgeto Park Forestry Station and Carabinieri Unit identified a company dedicated to cattle breeding, within which a illegal pipeline that conveyed sewage from the stables directly into the wooded area protected. For this reason, the two brothers who own the company have been reported at the Public Prosecutor's Office of Palmi. Also in Varapodio, the carabinieri of the local station and of the Forestry Carabinieri Unit of Cittanova they reported the owner of a concrete company which, located near the Marro river, used an illegal dump to pour the resulting materials from the processing of aggregates into the river.

Lastly, the Carabinieri checks they also focused on compliance with building regulations, an area in which some irregularities were found regarding the disposal of industrial waste, with complaints for 8 entrepreneurs who had created construction works without the required authorizations. Among these, two farmers had built an entire stable for sheltering pigs, in total disregard of the environmental impact that this construction has on the ecosystem

For all the aforementioned, administrative sanctions for a total of approximately 220.000 euros were also contested, connected to the obligation to restoration of the environmental damage found. Furthermore, the preventive seizure of the areas subject to pollution was carried out.
In any case, the criminal proceedings are currently pending investigation and the actual responsibility of the persons referred, in conjunction with the validity of the accusations made against them, will be examined during the subsequent process. They are not mutually exclusive further investigative and evidentiary developments, also in favor of people subjected to investigations.
