Collesalvetti (Livorno), expired and dirty food: 200kg of food seized and a bar fined.

As part of the Carabinieri's constant checks on food safety and counterfeiting to verify compliance with current legislation and prevent potential risks to public health, the military of the NAS - Anti-adulteration and Health Unit of Livorno seized 200 kilograms of various foods at a bar and restaurant business in Collesalvetti, in the province of Livorno.

Sanitary deficiencies and incorrect conservation

The Carabinieri ascertained that inside the business there were various types of packaged food products intended for administration to customers bearing the expiry date and the minimum shelf life beyond the validity period on the label, so as to disregard the procedures of the self-control manual which provides for the withdrawal of non-compliant products.

During the inspection, the Carabinieri also detected serious hygienic deficiencies such as mold on the walls, previous dirt and residues from previous processing, and mixed storage of food with material not relevant to the activity.

The penalties

The owner of the business, a 77-year-old from Pisa, in addition to the seizure of food for an estimated value of 1.500 euros, was imposed an administrative fine of 2.000 euros and the competent authorities were informed in the matter.
