Matteo Messina Denaro, the last Cosa Nostra massacre, has died.

After a few days of agony, he died in the L'Aquila hospital the boss Matteo Messina Denaro, the latest massacre of Cosa Nostra, arrested the following January 30 years on the run.

The 61-year-old mafia boss suffered from a serious form of colon cancer which had been diagnosed while he was still at large, at the end of 2020. Messina Denaro died shortly before 2am. His body would be found in one of the basements of the morgue of the L'Aquila hospital, which is no more than a hundred meters from the room- cell in which he had been hospitalized since August 8th. 

Outside the morgue there are a few cameras, a few photographers and a few journalists, but a compact presence of all police. In the next few hours it will be possible to understand the destination of the body, which is available to the judicial authorities of Palermo.

It was colon cancer that led the Carabinieri del Ros and the Palermo Prosecutor's Office on the trail of the boss, who managed to escape justice for 30 years. After the capture, Messina Denaro was subjected to chemotherapy in the L'Aquila super prison, where a sort of infirmary was set up for him next to the cell.

In the 9 months of detention, the godfather of Castelvetrano underwent two surgical operations related to cancer complications. Since the last one he has never recovered, so much so that the doctors decided not to send him back to prison, but to treat him in a maximum security room in the hospital, treating him with pain therapy and then sedating him.

Before losing consciousness, he met some family members and gave the surname to his daughter Lorenza Alagna, had in hiding and never recognized. The girl, who had met her father for the first time in prison in April, together with one of the mafia boss's sisters and her niece Lorenza Guttadauro, who is also the boss's defender, has been at her bedside in the last few days.

The Prosecutor's Office of L'Aquila, in agreement with that of Palermo, has arranged the autopsy on the body.
