Alessandria: thirty-three cats saved by animal control officers, they were wasted away and malnourished in very serious hygienic and sanitary conditions.
Thirty-three cats, including mothers and babies, mostly malnourished and with severe dysentery, segregated inside an apartment in extremely serious hygienic and health conditions. It's the scenario of extreme degradation which the zoophilic guards of the International Organization for Animal Protection (OIPA) found themselves in front of during an inspection in the municipality of Stazzano, in the province of Alessandria.
«The animals, in a state of serious negligence, they lived in the dark among their excrement and filth, in an apartment with unbreathable air", Cristina Destro, the coordinator of the OIPA Animal Guards Unit of Alessandria and the province, tells us. «Two mother cats were locked in a rabbit cage together with seven kittens from different litters. Very thin, they were too deprived of water, food and litter".
In addition to being malnourished and very wasted, many of the cats were suffering from widespread alopecia and suffered from ectoparasitic dermatitis. The condition of a male cat, seriously injured in a testicle, is particularly critical.
One was also found during the inspection red-eared slider in a tray with putrid and stagnant water.
All the animals were seized and the zoophile guards immediately started the procedure for restoring the apartment by contacting the local health authority, the municipality and social services and asking the mayor of Stazzano, Pierpaolo Bagnasco, to issue an ordinance prohibiting the keeping of animals by those who kept the poor cats.
The two mothers, the little ones and the seriously injured cat were entrusted to some associations which made themselves available for the most urgent care, while for all the other cats, about twenty, including some very emaciated and debilitated, Oipa asks for everyone's solidarity to provide for their nutrition and healthcare expenses for the veterinary checks to which the cats will be subjected.
Anyone who wants to give them a peaceful and loving life can write to guardialessandria@oipa.org, or call 3383583969.
Oipa invites you to do not ignore cases of degradation and mistreatment of which you are aware and to always contact your zookeepers who, in full respect of privacy, can intervene to protect the animals.
