The State Police of Agrigento ha executed an arrest warrant for a criminal suspect issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Agrigento against 2 subjects, of Egyptian and Syrian nationality respectively, landed at Lampedusa last July 7th.

The two arrested are held responsible for the crime referred to in the art. 12 bis Legislative Decree 286/98 because, in competition with each other and with other currently unidentified entities, residents in Libya, they allegedly allowed 46 migrants to illegally enter the national territory, mainly of Bangladeshi nationality, in order to profit from it, leading, governing and tracing the route while driving a vessel unsuitable for making such a crossing and poor safety conditions, exposing people to danger to their lives.

It came from the journey, as an unintended consequence, the death of three migrants of Egyptian and Bangladeshi nationality, two of which were lost during navigation and one, Egyptian, recovered at sea.

The events occurred in the early hours of July 7th when a wooden boat of about 10 meters has sunk near the island of Lampedusa and sank after hitting the cliff: 43 migrants were rescued on the coast of the island while three of them lost their lives.

The investigation activity conducted at the Lampedusa hotspot by the police officers of the Agrigento Flying Squad, of the Central Operations Service and of the SISCO (Investigative Sections of the Central Operations Service) of Palermo has allowed us to reconstruct the phases of the sea crossing from the Libyan coast to the Italian one, also acquiring serious circumstantial evidence against the two arrested, who during the departure phases would have taken care of the boarding operations of the migrants, taking care of the order inside it, and would have taken care, during the crossing, of running the boat and refueling the engines until the arrival in Lampedusa.

The suspects were held in prison, awaiting the validation hearing.

Today's provision is based on serious indications of guilt and on a circumstantial framework acquired during the investigations, meaning that full criminal responsibility for the facts indicated will be ascertained in court.
