Varese, the Municipality and the city's prison sign the Protocol for the inclusion of prisoners in the working environment: 15 prisoners have already been included in the project.

For several years the Municipality of Varese has been implementing the memorandum of understanding signed between ANCI and the Penitentiary Administration Department for the employment of prisoners. The administration has thus signed an agreement with the Varese prison which provides for the creation of programs for carrying out extra-mural activities in favor of the local community, such as maintenance of public green areas, maintenance of buildings and places of cultural attraction, recovery of abandoned areas. In fact, this too was discussed this morning at a conference entitled "Prison and Work, law, re-education, opportunities" which took place in Ville Ponti. Present at the event were the mayor of Varese Davide Galimbrti and the personnel manager of the Municipality of Varese, Gianluca Caruso.

“The constitutional dictate – said the mayor Davide Galimberti – underlines the importance of re-education, and work represents the instrument of absolute centrality in every rehabilitation process. From this perspective, the Municipality plays an active and supportive role in the implementation of policies aimed at encouraging interaction between the local community and subjects at social risk".

To date, the Administration has employed 15 people in maintenance activities of the city greenery, building maintenance and in cleaning and maintenance of the decoration of the Municipal Palace. Of these 15 people, eight are under the age of 50 and seven are older.

“This project has led to an important collaboration between the prison treatment team and the Personnel Office of our institution –– explained the manager Gianluca Caruso – a work of synergies aimed at inserting the right person for the implementation of the project proposed work. It must also be underlined that all the people hired so far have demonstrated great seriousness, a profound respect for the work but also for the rules, all with an attitude that is available, flexible and open to learning. But – concludes Caruso – one of the most interesting things about this project, demonstrating its usefulness, is that none of the people included have returned to prison again”.
