Udine, they deceive a lady by convincing her that her son had caused a serious accident: the police are looking for them
Udine, yesterday afternoon, 6 May, a police officer from the Udine Police Headquarters intervened in a street in the centre, where a woman had suffered a scam. The officers were able to ascertain that the elderly lady, about an hour earlier, had received a phone call on her landline number from a man, who informed her that her son had caused a very serious accident and that he was currently in a Carabinieri barracks and risked being arrested: the lady could have helped him, avoiding arrest, only by handing over all the cash and jewels in her possession to a woman, who would shortly show up at her door, and who would then proceed to rescue his son.
The woman tried in vain to contact her son, thus convincing herself that what she was told was true; having collected the money he had at home, around 5000 euros, and some jewels, including three valuable watches and several necklaces, he then handed them over to a woman, evidently an accomplice of the man on the phone, who introduced herself as an employee of a notary's office , who then quickly walked away.
Only an hour later, when her son arrived, the lady realized she had been deceived and called the police. Investigation activities aimed at identifying those responsible for the scam are underway by the police officers and the Flying Squad of the Police Headquarters.
On this occasion, the State Police recommends that all citizens, in particular elderly people who live alone, follow these few but very useful tips/recommendations.
-do not open the door to strangers and do not let them enter your home, even if they wear uniforms or claim to be employees of public utility companies. In case of doubt, do not hesitate to contact the Single Emergency Number 112 and ask for help.
-do not give money to strangers who qualify as agents, officials of public or private bodies, lawyers: remember that no body, and certainly not the police force, sends personnel home to pay bills or fines, to make refunds or replace counterfeit banknotes.
-keep a diary with the numbers of public utility services next to your phone, so you can have it at hand in case of need or checks. And in any case, in case of suspicion, never call the numbers provided by the stranger at the door or on the telephone for reassurance: on the other end of the telephone there will always be an accomplice of the intruder!
-if they call you on the phone saying that one of your relatives needs money so as not to be arrested, cut off the call, it's a scam! And if you want to call the relative who would be in difficulty, do it with another telephone or mobile phone, different from the one on which you received the suspicious phone call, because the scammers manage to "keep the telephone line busy", not allowing you to find the line or allowing you just to talk to another accomplice of theirs.
-advice also for younger people and neighbors of elderly people: don't leave elderly people alone, take an interest in their daily life, remind them to call you for any doubts or needs, or if they receive visits from strangers, and don't hesitate to call the State Police to report any anomalous or suspicious circumstances involving your elderly neighbor.
