Fight against drunk driving and drug taking. The police intensify checks.
Rieti, in night between Saturday and Sunday Last year the Rieti Traffic Police Section intensified checks aimed at combating the phenomenon of road traffic driving while intoxicated and/or impaired by drugs or psychotropic, still today the cause of numerous road accidents. The Agents of the Traffic Police Section carried out checks on the territory of the province, focusing in particular on the urban areas of Piazza Cavour and Porta D'arce, most affected by the "nightlife.
The patrols carried out checks on numerous vehicle drivers, ascertaining the presence of alcohol or narcotic or psychotropic substances. These investigations were also carried out thanks to theassistance of healthcare personnel of the State Police, a doctor and a nurse, who carried out preliminary tests and swabs for the collection of biological samples in order to ascertain the presence of narcotic and/or psychotropic substances in drivers. All the subjects stopped driving vehicles were subjected to precursors for the detection of alcoholic substances and, overall, they were 46 people were checked.
The theme of prevention was, as always, the fulcrum of all the activities carried out: it is of fundamental importance to prevent the occurrence of road accidents caused by a careless or dangerous driving following the intake of the aforementioned substances. In addition to the dramatic consequences that a road accident causes in terms of injuries or deaths, we remember that the highway code provides significant penalties for driving while intoxicated and\or under the influence of psychotropic substances or narcotics, both administrative and criminal.
In particular, additional sanctions are provided for license withdrawal for the purposes of suspension for up to a maximum of two years and the revision of the license which entails the obligation for the driver to report to the Provincial Medical Commission for the suitability of the psychophysical requirements. The confiscation of the vehicle is also foreseen if the driver is also the owner of the vehicle and is caught driving with a blood alcohol level higher than 1,5 g\l.
Many accidents, especially among the younger ones, occur as a result of drivers taking alcohol or drugs. For this reason the State Police is involved, in our province and in all the provinces of Italy, in one road safety campaign which takes place through targeted checks organized on weekend days.
The goal is the halving the number of road victims by 2030 and zero by 2050.
