Superyacht shipwreck in Porticello: bodies of four missing recovered, two still missing.

The dramatic sinking of the superyacht Bayesian off Porticello, Sicily, has seen the recovery of the bodies of four of the six missing, while a fifth body has been located inside the wreck and will be recovered in the coming days.

The recovered bodies belong to banker Jonathan Bloomer, lawyer Chris Morvillo and their wives. Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah are still missing.

The accident occurred when the Bayesian, anchored off the port of Porticello, capsized during a violent storm, sinking rapidly. There were 22 people on board, and the body of the yacht's cook, Recaldo Thomas, was found soon after the sinking. The searches continued unabated for two days, until the divers managed to enter the hull of the sailing ship.

Although the hope of finding the missing alive had now faded, the recovery of the bodies was a crucial moment. The rescue unit consisted of 27 divers and a Coast Guard robot, which recorded detailed videos and images to help reconstruct the dynamics of the accident. Investigators are evaluating whether human error may have contributed to the shipwreck.

The commander of the *Bayesian*, James Cutfield, was interrogated to reconstruct the events preceding the sinking. Other survivors were also interviewed to better understand the circumstances of the tragedy. Among the factors that may have contributed to the sinking, initial inspections found that the sailing ship's centerboard was partially raised at the time of the disaster, which may have facilitated the sinking.

Additionally, it appears that at least one of the ship's hatches was left open, allowing water to rush in when the storm hit. The authorities contacted the Italian Sea Group company, owner of the shipyard that had launched the Bayesian, to acquire all the information on the sailing ship, which had been updated in 2016 and 2020. Thanks to the GPS tracks, it was possible to reconstruct the movements of the yacht before the sinking and make some hypotheses about the causes of the accident.

A moving account of the tragedy was given by the parents of little Sophie, a one-year-old girl who survived the shipwreck. Her mother, Charlotte Golunski, described how, in the midst of the disaster, she managed to save her daughter, holding her close as they tried to reach safety. The family, together with other survivors, were hosted at the Domina Zagarella hotel in Santa Flavia, where they received psychological assistance.

Meanwhile, leaders of Morgan Stanley International, the investment bank where Jonathan Bloomer worked, went to the hotel to support the survivors and assist in the ongoing investigation. The Bayesian sinking raised questions about the effectiveness of safety measures and the preparedness of the crew in the face of adverse weather events. In conclusion, while searches continue to recover the remaining bodies and clarify the circumstances of the sinking, the *Bayesian* tragedy remains a painful and complex event, with implications that go well beyond the loss of life, involving technical and legal issues which will take time to fully resolve.
