Sanremo, the State Police seized 250 kilos of drugs and arrested the courier of the vehicle that was transporting them.
The policemen of the Sanremo police station, during a service aimed at combating illegal immigration and preventing crimes near the border areas, noticed a truck parked in an anomalous and dangerous way, close to the access to a service lay-by.
Given the frequent use of heavy vehicles for the trafficking of migrants who illicitly intend to cross the border area and then head towards other European countries and also taking into account the position in which the vehicle was located, the operators decided to subject the driver of the vehicle to a check-up.
The driver, identified as a 45-year-old of Moroccan origins, appeared, although cooperative, immediately tense, declared that he was transporting wood and that he came from Spain.
The truck was initially inspected only visually, in order to avoid the presence of migrants. Then, given the driver's suspicious behavior, the investigators proceeded with a more careful inspection and noticed some imperfections in the trailer, which in some places seemed deformed, almost as if hiding cavities.
At that point the driver showed strong impatience and agitation, so much so that he pushed the operators, assuming that there might be narcotics inside, to open the compartment with suitable tools.
Inside the cavity, 44 vacuum-packed and heat-sealed wrappers in black cellophane bags of different weights were found, equal to a total of 250 kilos of narcotic substance.
The man was arrested for drug trafficking.
The heavy vehicle was seized, as were the two and a half quintals of drugs that were stolen from the market and which probably would have produced an income of around one million euros.
