Tragedy in Nole Canavese: mother drowns 10-month-old daughter and attempts suicide.
A family tragedy has shocked the small town of Nole Canavese, in the province of Turin, where a 30-year-old mother, Carola, drowned her 10-month-old daughter, Perla, in the bathtub, and then attempted suicide. The woman, suffering from postpartum depression, had been receiving psychological treatment since the birth of her child.
The dramatic discovery
The one who discovered the horror was Antonio Parrinello, Perla's father, 35 years old. Returning home for lunch shortly before 13 pm, he found the little girl lifeless in the bathtub and his wife injured, with cuts to her neck, chest and wrists. Desperate, Antonio tried to revive his daughter while calling for help, but the attempts of the 118 paramedics were unable to revive the little girl's heartbeat.
The reconstruction of the facts
According to the reconstruction by the investigators, Carola drowned little Perla and then took a kitchen knife and injured herself. The injuries she inflicted on herself, however, were superficial, with the exception of the deeper ones in the neck area. The woman is currently hospitalized at the Molinette hospital in Turin, where she is being guarded by the Carabinieri.
A fragile psychological picture
Carola was being treated for postpartum depression, a condition that had manifested itself since Perla's birth. The mother was following a psychological path and was supposed to meet her therapist on the afternoon of the tragedy. Postpartum depression, which affects many women after giving birth, can have devastating effects if not adequately treated, leading to serious episodes of psychological suffering.
The community in shock
The news has deeply shaken the community of Nole Canavese. Friends and neighbors describe the family as apparently normal and affectionate, but they emphasize that Carola had been in a state of emotional fragility for some time. "She seemed like a loving mother, but her gaze was often absent," said a neighbor.
Postpartum Depression: A Silent Drama
Postpartum depression is a severe form of depression that occurs in the weeks or months after giving birth. It can include symptoms such as deep sadness, difficulty bonding with your baby, negative thoughts, and, in extreme cases, urges to self-harm or be violent. Experts say a lack of adequate support and a late diagnosis can make the condition worse.
Investigations underway
Investigators are trying to reconstruct the exact dynamics and motives of the act. The Turin prosecutor's office has opened an investigation for voluntary homicide, while Carola will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to assess her mental state at the time of the act.
A tragedy that leaves questions
The death of little Perla leaves an unfillable void and many questions. How was it possible that Carola's psychological situation was not monitored more carefully? Could this tragedy have been avoided?
The need for prevention
Experts emphasize the importance of psychological and social support for new mothers, especially those at risk of postpartum depression. Institutions must guarantee effective and accessible treatment paths, to prevent other families from experiencing a similar drama.
While waiting for the investigations to shed light, the community is united in grief for little Perla, an innocent victim of a family tragedy and an often underestimated disease.
