Livorno. The Carabinieri arrest the 4 alleged perpetrators of multiple home burglaries perpetrated between Liguria and Tuscany.

Upon order from the Public Prosecutor's Office of Livorno, the Carabinieri of the Operational Unit of the Livorno Company as part of the "ZORLI" operation gave execution of a precautionary custody order in prison against 4 men, aged between 27 and 43, all with criminal records, seriously suspected of being the perpetrators of 11 home burglaries perpetrated in the provinces of Livorno, Pisa and La Spice, between the 7th and 19th of last December.

The military, in agreement with the Deputy Public Prosecutor of Livorno, holder of the file, collected serious circumstantial elements using the analysis of footage from public and private video surveillance systems, to the statements made in the complaint by the victims, as well as thanks to environmental interceptions, observation services and the examination of the bank movements used by some of the suspects, reconstructing an identikit and a modus operandi which directed the military towards the alleged perpetrators of the crimes .

The impulse that allowed the meticulous reconstruction of the Carabinieri investigators dates back to 11 October 2023 when the theft takes place against an 87-year-old pensioner from Livorno. A self-styled gas operator shows up at the woman's house and, after gaining her trust and convincing her of the need to open the safes to prevent damage to the contents due to an alleged gas leak, he stole her jewelry worth 30.000 euros. The cameras of the house, acquired by the investigators, allowed the alleged perpetrator, a 43-year-old resident in Sarzana, to be identified and given a name.

The subsequent telephone conversations intercepted then made it possible to extend the scope of the investigations with the involvement of other subjects, two brothers aged 28 and 30 living in Viareggio and a 27 year old from Sarzana.

For the criminal activity the alleged perpetrators would have used a White Fiat Grande Punto, registered to a 44-year-old resident of the Ciampino nomad camp, used for travel across the territory, to which, to avoid connection with the crimes committed and gain impunity, false license plates replicating those of artfully replicated cars of the same model were affixed using double-sided tape.

The choice of homes to burgle would have taken place taking into account the presence or absence of alarm systems or cameras, deducing, also from the value of the parked cars, the amount of the hoped-for stolen goods and especially the presence of "zorli", safes in Sinti dialect. Again from the Carabinieri's investigations it was possible to ascertain how the suspects systematically left their mobile phones at their respective homes in order to create a "digital alibi".

The time frame of the thefts was carefully planned and selected between 17pm and 20pm so as to be able to take advantage of the darkness caused by the winter period to wander around residential neighborhoods without being noticed, also taking advantage of the fact that, according to them, many people in that time slot have not yet returned to their homes or are going out on errands.

Even the choice of the driver of the Fiat Grande Punto during the criminal actions would not have been left to chance, but rather conditioned by direct knowledge of the road network and, depending on the area, left to the 43-year-old from Sarzana for the area of ​​La Spezia and Massetano, or to the 28 year old from Viareggio for those of Pisa and Livorno.

From what emerged it would appear that the suspects during the reconnaissance of the places would remain in contact with walkie talkie transceiver equipment with which they even managed to pick up the radio frequencies of the Police and Carabinieri operations centers, stealing their contents. The purpose is to provide immediate notice of the possible arrival of the owners or staff. to the accomplice who is inside the homes.

After having identified the chosen home, after checking the presence or absence of alarms or cameras, the doorbell is rung. The person in charge of ringing the house bell always wears the ring to camouflage himself uniform of a home delivery worker of a well-known brand, also wearing a surgical mask to better conceal his appearance and using voluminous raider backpacks to hide objects suitable for burglary, even bulky ones to be introduced into the house, once the glass of the chosen shutter has been broken.

In a house in San Giuliano Terme, on 8 December, using a flexible hose, the criminals managed to open the safe and remove its contents, consisting of jewels and valuable pens, not even disdaining to grab the latest model of vacuum cleaners from a well-known brand. On the following 19 December, in Livorno, the criminals, after having turned everything upside down, they completely remove the "zorli" from the wall with all the contents of jewels and money worth 35000 euros.

In the majority of the attacks carried out, i.e. in the two indicated above, but also in two other thefts in La Spezia on 7, 9 and 11 December, in Cascina on the 12th and 18th, and in Santo Stefano Magra on the 14th, the criminals take away significant quantities of stolen goods, mainly jewelery and cash.

Only in two cases does the coup fail. On one occasion they managed to cut open the safe in a house in La Spezia on 7 December, but the arrival of the owner's wife forced them to retreat. In the other case, again in La Spezia on the following 9th, they have to settle for taking away only two electronic controllers of a well-known video game console.

But the investigation went even further. The analysis of the bank movements of the current accounts of the 43-year-old and his wife made it possible to ascertain that the latter, from 9 December, had started a commercial bar business based in Sarzana with a regular VAT number.

What made the investigators suspicious was the movement of 7000 euros deriving from two cash payments of 3500 euros each, which would have been used to purchase the commercial license. This economic availability appeared to be anomalous to say the least considering that the 43-year-old and his wife did not appear to be carrying out any work activity and were also recipients of citizen's income from 2019 to 2022.

This also earned the 43-year-old from Sarzana aindictment for self-laundering for having used the proceeds of the criminal activity in the purchase and start-up of a commercial activity which was placed under preventive seizure.

The precautionary measure issued against all four members would be amply justified, according to the investigating judge, both by the objective seriousness of the facts, taking into account their recurrence in a very short time, and by the criminal personality of the suspects, and by the stringent need to prevent contact between them and preserve the development of the investigations.
