Caltanissetta: seven arrests with the "Stiela" anti-mafia operation.

Caltanissetta. This morning i ROS Carabinieri, assisted in the operational phase by Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Enna, have executed a precautionary custody order, issued by the Judge for Preliminary Investigations at the Court of Caltanissetta, during the preliminary investigations, following a request from the DDA of Caltanissetta Prosecutor's Office, against seven subjects. In particular towards Gurgone Sebastiano, 71 years old, Calcagno Sebastiano, 34 years old, Scibona Giuseppe, 70 years old, Scibona Cristofero, 45 years old, all residents of Valguarnera Caropepe, the Judge for Preliminary Investigations ordered the precautionary measure of detention in prison as they were seriously suspected of committing the crimes of mafia-style criminal association, aggravated by the availability of weapons, and extortion aggravated by the mafia method.

In the same provision, the Judge for preliminary investigations also ordered the precautionary measure of custody under house arrest against: Martorana Antonino, 51 years old under investigation for the crime of money laundering, of Greco Philip, 63 years old, under investigation for the crime of assistance to associates, and, finally, of Catalan Rosario, 84 years old, under investigation for the crime of usury.
The precautionary measures constitute the outcome of a complex investigation activity, conducted for two years by the ROS Carabinieri and coordinated by Caltanissetta District Anti-Mafia Directorate, on the territory of the province of Enna, with particular reference to that area which is commonly known as "Dittaino Valley”; in fact the main production area of the Enna area which, as already established in various final sentences, has always aroused the appetites of mafia crime.

The investigative activity has made it possible to acquire a serious circumstantial framework regarding the reorganization of Cosa Nostra, and specifically the Enna's family, following the release of Gurgone Sebastiano in April 2019. On several occasions, he would have proclaimed with satisfaction his status as a man of honour, a role that placed him at the top of the mafia association operating in the aforementioned area. The monitoring focused not only on Gurgone Sebastiano, but also on his closest collaborators, namely Calcagno Sebastiano, son of Calcagno Domenico, an extremely important member of Cosa Nostra from Enna killed in 2003 due to conflicts within the mafia organisation, Scibona Cristofero and Scibona Giuseppe, father of Cristofero, and respectively nephew and brother-in-law of the deceased Calcagno Domenico. The investigation has revealed serious clues regarding an alleged typically parasitic extortionate pressure to the detriment of important production activities of the Dittaino Valley, systematically harassed with the aim of mainly profiting sums of money, a symptom of the continuing subjugation of some economic operators in that area. In particular, Gurgone Sebastiano, starting from his release from prison, would have implemented criminal strategies aimed at collection of "protection money" with the indispensable complicity, according to the serious indications found by the investigating judge, of Calcagno Sebastiano, Scibona Cristofero and Scibona Giuseppe, receiving sums of money on an annual basis from two entrepreneurs from the Dittaino Valley. The alleged association headed by Gurgone Sebastiano would have had the availability of weapons, to be used if necessary for pursue illicit purposes, some of which have been held for several years, because they would have already belonged to the deceased Calcagno Domenico.

In the context of an alleged extortion episode, the conducted by Martorana Antonino, seriously suspected of the crime of money laundering, as he would have done his utmost to carry out operations capable of hindering the identification of theillicit origin of part of the money; would have issued in favor of an entrepreneur victim of extortion, an invoice for a service, according to the accusatory hypothesis, which never occurred and for an amount corresponding to the sum of money extorted. The GIP of the Court of Caltanissetta finally, it recognized the circumstantial gravity of the investigative findings collected against Greco Philip, as a contiguous subject but not belonging to the mafia association, as he allegedly provided assistance to Gurgone Sebastiano; in particular, there are serious indications to believe that Greco offered himself, among other things, to act as an intermediary between Gurgone and the owner of a commercial business of Valguarnera Caropepe; as well as against Catalano Rosario, a person already definitively convicted in the past mafia association, for the crime of continuous usury to the detriment of the aforementioned merchant. When executing the precautionary order, the judicial police also implemented search activities both on the initiative and delegated by the DDA of Caltanissetta.
