Agrigento, special surveillance for two individuals sentenced to 17 and 13 years for mafia-related crimes

Agrigento, the Court of Palermo - Prevention Measures Section, on the proposal of the Police Commissioner of Agrigento pro-tempore, applied the measure of special PS surveillance, aggravated with residence obligation, to MELI Rosario, aged 73, and to PIOMBO Calogero, aged 70, both from Camastra.

The Court imposed a sentence on MELI Rosario for four years and on PIOMBO Calogero for three years, as they were considered socially dangerous people, as they were suspected of being part of a mafia-type association operating in the province.

Following the investigation by the Anti-Crime Division, the Prevention Measures Tribunal deemed that MELI and PIOMBO had been presented with evidence capable of supporting a judgment of social dangerousness.

MELI and PIOMBO were investigated as part of the VULTUR anti-mafia operation, developed by the State Police, and on 07.07.20 16 the Flying Squad personnel arrested them, together with other subjects, in execution of a custody order precautionary in prison.

The MELI Rosario, called "I will be ti puparu “, had already been convicted with an irrevocable sentence, as part of the ALLETTO Croce +77 trial, for crimes for the crime referred to in art. 416 bis CP, committed until 1993, as belonging to the mafia-style clan called “stidda”, subjected to the measure of special surveillance by the PS with obligation to stay, applied to him for years 5, as well as declared a habitual delinquent by the Surveillance Magistrate of Agrigento.

He came to the fore again in 2012, when he assumed the position of regent of the team “stiddara” of Camastra and carried out an extortion racket in the funeral sector using mafia methods.

The crimes of mafia-type association, exercised with a top role, attempted aggravated extortion and

crimes relating to weapons, for which the sentence of the Court of Agrigento dated 22.11.2018, confirmed on appeal with the sentence of 11.12.2020, resulted in a sentence of 17 years and 6 months of imprisonment.

PIOMBO Calogero, also restricted, was sentenced, with the aforementioned sentence, for the crimes of mafia-type association and attempted aggravated extortion, to a sentence of 13 years and 6 months of imprisonment, being recognized as a person who had a role as direct coadjutor of MELI in the management of criminal events, also making the premises of its tobacco shop available for holding meetings between members and meetings with representatives of other mafia cliques.

The Court of Palermo, with the decree issued, imposed - accepting the Police Commissioner's proposal - the prohibition on obtaining and the forfeiture of public licenses and trade authorizations, also for cohabiting family members.
