Cycle path named after Raffaele Lagonia on the Catanzaro seafront: ceremony on Friday 28 July.

Friday July 28th, beginning at 18 hours, on Catanzaro seafront, with meeting point at the Marron Glacés bar, Will host the naming ceremony of the cycle path after Raffaele Lagonia, icon of Calabrian cycling. The municipal administration promoted the initiative and accepted it the request of Raffaele Lagonia's nephew, which bears the same name as him, and formalized by the Chiattinese Sports Group and has given its patronage to the special commemorative day which will be opened by delivery of event t-shirts e bike skill games for children aged 7 to 12 and will continue with the delivery of medals and the intervention of institutional representatives.

“The administration, completing the process for naming a public area after Raffaele Lagonia – comments the mayor Nicola Fiorita – in agreement with the Chiattinese Group intended to associate the already existing cycle path along the seafront with his name and memory. In making the teachings that Lagonia left us always alive, the goal is to involve many bike enthusiasts and bring closer, above all, the young generations towards sport, aggregation, well-being, thanks to the possibility that the city offers of practicing outdoor activities almost all year round. A small gesture that links our seafront to the memory of a figure who gave so much to the city."

Retracing the history of the Catanzaro cycling club, of which Raffaele Lagonia was the founder and standard bearer, is the current president Giuseppe Brugnano: “There have been many titles and trophies achieved in 50 years of competitions that have left their mark throughout Calabria. I want to remember the Italian championship won in 1982 in the Pordenone velodrome by Vincenzo Ciambrone in the student category, individual specialty with points. And two more intersud titles, the first at the end of the 70s, won by Salvatore Ferro in the pupils, and the second in the 2000s by Roberto Dodaro, cyclocross rookie category. The winner of the highest number of regional championships in all youth categories among rookies, students and juniors was, however, Antonino Lagonia, son of Raffaele, which also managed to capture national attention. We thank the mayor and the municipal administration for wanting to remember those who spent their lives training and introducing so many kids to the world of cycling. Our intent is to strengthen dialogue with the institutions, so that we can build the foundations for creating a real cycle track in the city and relaunch a new youth movement linked to two wheels".
