Catanzaro, two suspects from the "Gaglianesi" clan are back in prison: the Court of Review reinstated the precautionary measure for mafia association.

In recent days, a Catanzaro, Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit of the Provincial Command, at the disposal of Court of Review, they implemented two measures to restore the precautionary measure in prison towards two suspects held responsible – in various capacities – for the crimes of mafia-type association, extortion e personal injury, aggravated by mafia method.

The two subjects had already been Arrested on February 27, 2024, along with others twenty-one people, as part of a large-scale operation coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) of Catanzaro, which had hit an alleged criminal group operating in the capital and its hinterland.

The investigation had led to the issuing of precautionary measures for alleged crimes which included, in addition to the mafia association, extortion, robbery, usury, fraud, self-laundering and fraudulent transfer of assets, many of which are aggravated by the mafia purposes.

At first, the Court of Review had partially reformed the precautionary order, excluding the seriousness of the circumstantial evidence in relation to the crime of mafia-type association and to the aggravating circumstance of mafia methods.

Against this decision, the Catanzaro District Anti-Mafia Office had submitted appeal to the Supreme Court.

La Supreme Court, in July 2025, accepted the appeal, canceling with postponement the review order.

Following the new examination, the Court has the original measure ordered by the investigating judge was fully confirmed, considering that the seriousness of the circumstantial evidence regarding the two's membership in the mafia gang known as “Gaglianesi Clan”, as well as the aggravating circumstance of the use of the mafia method, thus arranging the pre-trial detention in prison.

The same fate had befallen, at the end of September, another suspect, already the recipient of a similar precautionary measure later annulled by the Review Court. In that case too, the Court of Cassation, accepting the appeal of the District Attorney, had postponed the case for a new ruling, leading to the restoration of the restrictive measure.

The complex investigative activity – conducted by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Catanzaro with the coordination of DDA – covered a broad time span, from 2014 to date, and has developed through wiretaps, checks and field investigations.

The evidence collected outlined the operation of the historic criminal gang of the "Gaglianesi", active in Catanzaro and dedicated to various crimes against the person and property.

The group, according to the investigative hypothesis, acted under the influence of 'ndrine of Isola Capo Rizzuto e San Leonardo di Cutro (Crotone), maintaining relationships with others as well Calabrian gangs.
