Caltanissetta: the mines told through maps, exhibition at Palazzo Moncada.

From 1 to 31 March 2025, the Lions Club Caltanissetta presents an exhibition dedicated to the geohistory of the Nisseno subsoil, with ancient maps and historical finds.

It will take place at Moncada Palace, from 1 to 31 March 2025, the exhibition entitled “Geohistory of the Nisseno subsoil: narration of the mines through cartography”.

The initiative, sponsored by the Municipality of Caltanissetta, was conceived and organized by the Lions Club Caltanissetta, chaired by the engineer Salvatore Vancheri, In collaboration with the geologist Marcello Frangiamone and the engineer Michael Brescia, president ofMineralogical Paleontological and Cultural Association of the Solfara of Sicily.

A journey between history and technology

The exhibition, curated byExhibition Designer Matilde Polizzi, will be enriched by the photographer's shots Lillo Micciche and from the collaboration of theMunicipal Administration of Serradifalco, which will make available historical finds from its own Interactive Ethnographic Museum of the Mine.

The exhibition will offer an immersive narrative to rediscover the mining history of the city through ancient topographic maps e new technologies, making tangible a past that has profoundly marked the territory.

Caltanissetta, the capital of sulphur

“The history of Caltanissetta is closely linked to the world of mining”, declared President Vancheri. “A rich and significant past which, between the second half of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, made the city the world capital of sulphur”.

The Lions Club Caltanissetta has been committed to the enhancement of the city and its historical heritage, with numerous services dedicated to the citizens of Nissa. On the occasion of the sixty-fifth anniversary of the club's approval (24 October 1959) and the delivery of the charter (March 19, 1960), this exhibition represents a further testimony of the Lions' commitment to the historical memory of the city.

Exhibition opening and details

The event will be inaugurated on March 1, 2025 at 18:00 PM and will remain open to visitors until 31 March 2025, at main floor of Palazzo Moncada. A unique opportunity for discover, through maps and finds, the history of the Nisseno subsoil and its mining heritage.
