CALTANISSETTA – Major operation by the Guardia di Finanza in central Sicily. Officers from the Caltanissetta Group, with the support of the Canicattì branch, identified and seized over 42 kilograms of foreign-manufactured tobacco products lacking the State Monopolies mark. The merchandise, destined for the illegal market, consisted of "Gutka" and "Snus" products, both tobacco products that pose a high health risk and are banned in much of Europe.
An operation triggered after careful analysis
The Finance Police's action was the result of monitoring the movement of suspicious goods in central Sicily. The analysis identified a shipment without proper certification, which, under Italian and European law, falls under the crime of smuggling of monopoly goods.
The seized tobaccos, coming from India and Pakistan, belong to two categories well known in the Asian markets: Gutka, a chewing tobacco mixed with aromatic substances, and the Snus, powdered tobacco for smoking. Both are used primarily by workers engaged in physically demanding activities due to their stimulant effects and high nicotine concentration.
High health risks
According to health experts, both products are highly dangerous. Gutka and snus can cause serious oncological and degenerative diseases, especially throat, lung, and mouth cancerSnus, banned in almost all of Europe, contains up to ten times the nicotine concentration of a traditional cigarette, resulting in the risk of addiction, hypertension, and vascular disease.
Precisely for this reason, their diffusion represents not only a violation of the regulations on monopolies, but also a direct threat to the health of consumers.

The arrest and ongoing investigations
The recipient of the shipment was identified as a Pakistani citizen residing in Canicattì. He was arrested in flagrante delicto and reported to the competent judicial authorities.
Investigators are now trying to reconstruct the entire production and distribution chain to identify any accomplices and international channels that facilitated the arrival of the illicit cargo in Sicily.
Fight against smuggling and protect health
The operation by the Guardia di Finanza is part of a wider framework of actions against smuggling, a phenomenon which undermines fair competition, causes huge losses to the treasury and, above all, puts the health of citizens at risk.
The seizure of the 42 kg of tobacco represents a success not only in terms of economic legality, but also in protecting public health, the primary objective of the Corps' activities.
