In the ongoing fight against ovarian cancer, a disease often underestimated but with devastating consequences, the Municipality of Cagliari is standing out for a pioneering initiative.
Every Friday from 9 am to 19.30 pm, Palazzo Bacaredda will be the point of reference for a free screening service dedicated to this form of female cancer.
The decision was taken by the municipal council, with resolution no. 70/2024, which wanted to expand the already existing breast screening and psychological help desk service, also managed free of charge.
Located on the ground floor of the Town Hall in via Roma 145, this service is carried out by the Association's volunteer health workers “Never again sun against cancer” and “Taccia Foundation”.
The launch of this new initiative received the applause of councilor Stefania Loi, president of the Equal Opportunities Commission. Loi highlighted the importance of this initiative in contributing to “reduce delays in screening” and in '“increase public awareness of the importance of prevention”.
Alba Chiara Bergamini, president of the Association “Never again sun against cancer”, expressed his support and gratitude for this new service. Bergamini underlined the fact that ovarian cancer is often defined as a “silent killer”, since “women are not sufficiently informed about it and the symptoms are not specific”.
Alongside the regional screening, the prevention campaign called “Every moment is a good time to take care of yourself” aims to offer free transvaginal ultrasound visits.
This initiative represents “a significant step in the fight against ovarian cancer and demonstrates the city's commitment to ensuring better health and well-being for women,” concluded President Loi. Furthermore, “with the availability of regular and free screening, it is hoped to identify any cases of ovarian cancer early and save lives through timely and appropriate interventions”.
