Sardinia: The "Gates of Sardinia" project is underway: €12 million to redevelop the island's ports and airports.

The goal: to offer tourists a unique calling card, enhance Sardinian identity, and improve decor and hospitality in access areas.

Sardinia, the "Gates of Sardinia" project is underway: €12 million to redevelop the island's ports and airports.

A welcoming, coordinated, and coherent image of Sardinia, capable of reflecting identity, beauty, and efficiency from the first step on the island.

With these objectives theRegional Department of Tourism started the project today “The Gates of Sardinia”, which involves all the main municipalities home to commercial ports and airports.

During the first operational meeting held in Cagliari, the Tourism Councillor Franco Cuccureddu underlined the strategic importance of the initiative: “The place of arrival is the first impact tourists have with our island, but also the last image they take away.”

12 million from the Development and Cohesion Fund for 10 municipalities on the island

The project is financed with 12 million euro of the Fund for Development and Cohesion (FSC) 2021-2027, divided equally between the municipalities of: Diamond, Cagliari, Alghero, Olbian, Golfo Aranci, Saint Teresa of Gallura, Port Torres, Tortolì, Oristano, Saint Justa.

The resources will be allocated to redevelopment of the areas surrounding ports and airports, often degraded or devoid of identifying elements.

Interventions: decorum, identity and innovation

Among the actions envisaged by the municipal projects, which now need to be defined in detail:

  • Flowerbeds and traffic islands with native flowers and plants, capable of evoking the scents and colours of Sardinia.

  • Smart benches equipped with free Wi-Fi and smartphone charging.

  • Coordinated screens and information systems, for a shared narrative of the island.

  • Urban decor interventions and improving accessibility.

To ensure coherence and homogeneity between the various interventions, the Department will establish a Single project office, which will support the Municipalities in the planning.

A new business card for Sardinia

Councilor Cuccureddu reiterated the initiative's mission: “Ensuring decorum and beauty at the gateways to our island means building tourist loyalty and restoring Sardinia to the image it deserves.”

The project aims to transform ports and airports into welcoming and distinctive spaces, capable of offering a positive experience both at the beginning and at the end of the trip.
