“Open Your Arms Now” in Brescia: a travelling journey in the UNESCO corridor to reflect on the future of Europe

From November 28 to 30, Davide D'Antonio's traveling show, featuring migrants and local actors, explores the connection between history, migration and the future of Europe along the UNESCO heritage of Brescia.

“Open Your Arms Now” in Brescia: a traveling journey in the UNESCO corridor to reflect on the future of Europe.

On Thursday 28, Friday 29 and Saturday 30 November 2024, as part of the 2024 edition of Wonderland Festival, the world premiere of the touring show Open your arms now, directed by Davide D'Antonio, made possible thanks to the contribution of the Community Networks call by Fondazione Comunità Bresciana, won by Fondazione Brescia Musei together with Fabbrica Sociale Teatro, Elefanti Volanti, with the addition of the precious contribution of Confartigianato Brescia.

Open your arms now was born from the intercultural project Camminando si fa il cammino (Walking makes the journey) whose protagonists – Adriana Mendicino, Agnieszka Kopecka, Amar Farooq, Delphine Toko, Fatjana Daiu, Hala Al Mukhallalati, Victor Hugo Jiménez – are migrants from different backgrounds. Led by the direction of Davide D'Antonio together with the actress Giuseppina Turra, the actors have given life to a collective travelling show that winds along the Unesco Corridor, the pedestrian path that connects the Capitolium area and the archaeological park of Roman Brixia to the monumental complex of the Museum of Santa Giulia and allows you to travel through at least 2500 years of history in less than a kilometre through open spaces, buildings, alleys and cloisters.

A world heritage site, which takes visitors, in a monumental context of rare immersion, to cross an extraordinary historical and monumental dimension by following a sequence unique in its richness and chronological extension, from the Roman age, to the Early Middle Ages, to the Renaissance, to contemporary art where the link with History becomes tangible. A History that here becomes universal and that merges inextricably with the History of the city and with the stories of the people who have crossed the spaces of the Unesco Corridor over the centuries: from the ancient Romans, to the Lombards up to the present day, to give life to an intense tale of intersections and migrations and to question the future of each individual and of Europe.

In a Europe burning with racism and anti-Semitism and where violent responses to waves of migration become the solution to all evils, it's difficult to try to change perspective. Perhaps only by looking at the past with the eyes of those who project themselves into the future is it possible to create that short circuit to escape from the current confusion. For this reason we propose a unique walk that unites the fascinating monuments of the UNESCO corridor of Brescia, a journey through history that covers more than 2000 years not only historically but also symbolically to ask ourselves as in a collective ritual "Who makes history? Is there anyone more equal than others?" - Davide D'Antonio, director.

This project has found support of the Brescia Community Foundation based on a measure (Community Networks call) which has as its principle the recognition and consolidation of a community dimension, understood as a shared space of intentions and values, a vision that aims to encourage innovative ways of collaborating between apparently distant worlds and entities (such as the social, cultural and educational sectors), but which instead are a continuum in the lives of people and of the communities themselves understood both as physical places to live and inhabit and as spaces of thought in which consciences are formed, like the show “Open your arms now”, it is in all respects a path that recognizes in the plurality of ideas, subjects, intuitions, expectations, themes, methods the overcoming of traditional barriers to the advantage of collective growth – Mario Mistretta, President of the Fondazione della Comunità Bresciana.
