Islamic extremist arrested in Brescia for recruiting young foreigners to use in terrorist attacks.

The Italian State Police arrested a Bangladeshi citizen living in the province of Mantua: according to investigations, he allegedly engaged in proselytism and indoctrination activities, recruiting young people to join jihad.

At dawn this morning, the State Police conducted an operation that led to the arrest of a thirty-seven-year-old Bangladeshi citizen, resident in the province of Mantua, accused of recruiting for the purpose of terrorism. The precautionary measure of restricted house arrest, ordered by the investigating judge at the Court of Brescia, was carried out following a complex investigation coordinated by the Brescia District Prosecutor's Office.

The charges: recruitment for terrorist purposes

The man is held responsible for criminally relevant activities pursuant to Article 270 quater, paragraph II, of the Criminal Code: recruitment to commit acts of violence or sabotage essential public services, for the purposes of terrorism.

The investigation, conducted by the DIGOS of Brescia and Genoa with the collaboration of the DIGOS of Mantua and the coordination of the Central Directorate of Prevention Police (UCIGOS), arose from the analysis of devices seized as part of another investigation that led to the final conviction of a young man linked to the terrorist organization Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TPP), believed to be an offshoot of Al Qaeda.

The role of “master” and jihadist indoctrination

According to investigators, the thirty-seven-year-old Bangladeshi man acted as a mentor to the young convict, gaining his trust and gradually indoctrinating him in the jihadist cause.

Although the boy confessed to not having attended Quran schools and only reading texts by Al-Qaeda activist Ali Jaber al-Fayfi, the suspect allegedly promised to send him "religious books" to complete his education. In this way, the young man would have recognized himself as his "student," absorbing teachings focused on the need for jihad and the writings of key figures of Islamic radicalism, such as Sayyid Qutb Ibrahim Husayn al-Shadhili, considered a fundamentalist ideologue and a martyr of radicalism.

Military training and proselytism videos

From the forensic analysis of the suspect's smartphone, the DIGOS recovered numerous terrorist-related contents: videos showing combat techniques and military training, such as the use of long and short weapons, firing positions, tactical cover, and advancement in battle formation.

Alongside this material, intense proselytism and doctrinal teaching activity was documented, with the dissemination of content that inextricably linked faith and armed struggle. The suspect allegedly propagated the jihadist vision that justifies the use of violence, even against "infidel" civilians (kuffar), as a means of imposing radical Islam on other religions, even to the point of personal martyrdom.

Searches and links with other subjects

As part of the operation, the police also conducted two searches of individuals who had significant dealings with the suspect. The investigations now aim to determine the extent of the network of contacts and clarify any international connections.

A worrying picture

The arrest confirms, according to investigators, the risk posed by so-called "preachers" of Islamic extremism, capable of attracting vulnerable or disoriented young people and transforming them into potential jihadists through the internet, the use of ideological materials, and direct contact.

Today's operation, described by investigators as a crucial step in preventing jihadist terrorism in Italy, once again underscores the importance of constant monitoring by police forces and coordination between various local DIGOS units to stem the phenomenon of radicalization.
