Workplace tragedy in Montello: 27-year-old worker dies during maintenance work.

Late in the afternoon of Wednesday, December 3rd, around 5:30 PM, a serious workplace accident rocked the municipality of Montello, in the province of Bergamo. Inside the Montello Spa plant, a company specializing in the recovery and recycling of plastic and organic materials, a 27-year-old worker lost his life during a maintenance operation. The circumstances of the incident are still under investigation, while ATS technicians and Carabinieri officers from the Bergamo provincial command continue their investigations.

Investigations into the dynamics are underway

The exact circumstances of the accident remain unclear. For this reason, ATS technicians, together with the Carabinieri of the Bergamo provincial command, are conducting in-depth surveys and collecting testimonies to reconstruct the events in detail. Technicians from PSAL, the Service for Prevention and Safety in the Workplace, are also working to verify compliance with safety measures and operational organization within the site. The affected area has been placed under lockdown, as ordered by the judicial authorities, to allow all necessary investigations to be carried out without alteration.

The profile of the victim

The victim was Mohssine Ghouati, a young worker of Moroccan origin who had lived for years in Pian Camuno, in the province of Brescia. He had arrived in Italy eight years earlier, gradually building a new life for himself. He had been married just over a year and, just two weeks before the tragedy, had finally been reunited with his wife, who had come from Morocco to join him. He had been employed by a Brescia-based company specializing in industrial maintenance that had long operated within the Montello Spa plant. His death shocked his colleagues, friends, and family, who were immediately notified by the relevant authorities.

The company's reaction: "We are shocked."

Montello Spa released an official statement a few hours after the accident, expressing deep condolences and sympathy to the victim's family. Management stated that it was "deeply shocked and dismayed by what happened," promising full cooperation with the authorities to accurately reconstruct the causes and circumstances of the tragic event. The company also emphasized that the young man was not a direct employee, but an external maintenance worker employed by a company that has operated at the plant for years.

Unions outraged and called for immediate strike

The tragedy, however, has sparked strong reactions within the trade union movement. Fiom, Filt, Filctem, and Nidil Cgil Bergamo have issued a highly critical statement, denouncing the fact that, despite the young worker's death, production at Montello Spa has not been suspended. According to the unions, the decision to continue operations "as if nothing had happened" represents an unacceptable disrespect not only for the victim, but for all workers at the plant. For this reason, an immediate strike has been called for the night shift, along with a meeting scheduled for this morning, December 4th.

A pain that sparks the debate on safety

The accident has reignited the debate on workplace safety, an issue that continues to tragically impact the Italian industrial landscape. Mohssine Ghouati's death is perceived as yet another episode requiring pause and reflection on the need for clearer responsibilities, more rigorous controls, and more stringent protocols to prevent risky situations. Unions insist that workplace deaths cannot be treated as routine events and that every plant must ensure conditions that truly put the lives and safety of workers first.

A territory shaken by tragedy

The communities of Pian Camuno and Montello are now united in grief and shock at the loss of a young man who had built his future far from his hometown, pursuing safety and stability. Just hours after the accident, questions, investigations, and the need for clear answers remain. But, above all, the memory of a 27-year-old man who died while carrying out his work, in a context that should guarantee protection and safety, remains.
