Bari, inauguration of the new green area in via delle Murge and the greening intervention with a small play area in Parco Gentile

They were inaugurated this morning two interventions carried out in the area of the broader experimental action implemented by the municipal administration for urban greenery (greening and forestation), the containment of climate change and the fight against the heat island effect - financed overall for 8 million euros by the PON Metro - which involves specific interventions, spread across the entire municipal territory, united by the aim of improving the offer of services in individual neighborhoods with a strong propensity for environmental sustainability.

The first, inaugurated in the presence of the Councilor for the Environment and Sport Pietro Petruzzelli and the President of Municipality II Gianlucio Smaldone, is the new green area in via delle Murge, in the Quartierino, a public space of approximately 1.300 mXNUMX created in a place previously entirely dedicated to traffic through the renovation of the area dedicated to the traffic island, the creation of a garden with the planting of trees and shrubs, a play area, a ping pong table, two for chess and checkers and a fitness area.

The choice of plants fell on predominantly Mediterranean species, or in any case acclimatised, with reduced water and maintenance needs: as regards trees, linden, Chinese hibiscus and laurel trees have been planted; as for shrubs, we opted for abelia, blue agapanthus, prostrate rosemary and lavandula officinale, as well as thornless landscape red bushes.

Overall, the intervention, worth 300 thousand euros, aimed to enhance the limited spaces available by concentrating the characteristic elements of increasing greenery in the city: planting of trees and grafting of native tree species to improve air quality and, consequently, the quality of life of residents.

“This is a “small-big” intervention on urban greenery that Municipality II has been waiting for for a long time – commented Gianlucio Smaldone -. This new green area appears particularly important from the perspective of the urban redevelopment underway in the Quartierino and meets the needs expressed by numerous families and, more generally, by the many residents of the Picone district. Precisely in the immediate vicinity of this new equipped garden, the Municipality intends to propose the establishment of a new isolated parking lot for food trucks, in order to encourage citizens to spend their free time there on milder evenings".

Following this, Pietro Petruzzelli, together with the president of Municipality I Lorenzo Leonetti, inaugurated the completed intervention in Parco Gentile, in the Japigia district, which saw the planting of new trees - olive trees, Aleppo pines, holm oaks and of Judas - and shrubs - prostrate rosemary, laurel, and blue agapanthus - and the creation of a play area for the little ones. The latter occupies an area of approximately 160 square meters covered with anti-trauma flooring of different thicknesses and colors (light blue background with circular and triangular portions of orange, yellow and red). A tower with a cableway and a curved slide have been installed, which can also be accessed via an abseil, two swaying hammocks, an hourglass, a rotating carousel, on which children can lie down, sit or stand with the support of side or top frame bars, and a swing with basket rotomoulded for children aged 4 and up, which can be used by six children at the same time. The total amount of the intervention amounts to 80 thousand euros.

“The opening of the play area in Parco Gentile – underlined Lorenzo Leonetti – represents an excellent opportunity for Japigia and enriches an area of the neighborhood that has always been devoid of these installations. This area represents the good result of a participatory policy that we have always carried out by comparing ourselves with the realities of the territory: in this case, for example, the request for the intervention came directly from the many families and children in the area. For this reason I am particularly happy to have satisfied one of their wishes. We will continue to invest in small children, the future of our city."

“After the creation of the playgrounds completed during the first mandate in all the neighborhoods of the city – concluded Pietro Petruzzelli – we are inaugurating these small and large widespread interventions which complete those areas dedicated to sport or add new ones, green and equipped for sporting activities. We have redeveloped and refunctionalized many unused or abandoned public spaces to make them places to meet and do exercises to keep fit. The idea is to spread numerous sports points throughout the city to transform Bari into a large open-air gym. In the specific case of the area in via delle Murge, we created an equipped garden to meet the legitimate needs of the residents of a neighborhood that is changing its face and which has always suffered from the absence of public green spaces. The small area in via Gentile, however, is a space where children can grow and play in more welcoming places, which also contribute to strengthening the community".

Both interventions were completed with the installation of an irrigation system serving the greenery and with the preparation of plinths and cable ducts necessary for the activation of the public lighting system, which will be carried out with subsequent tenders.
