At 11.05, time of the collision between the two convoys, the mayor of Bari Vito Leccese, together with the mayors of the communities involved and the families of the victims, he laid a wreath of flowers and observed a minute's silence together with those present.

"Eight years ago the train accident between Andria and Corato violently shook our lives - Mayor Vito Leccese declared -. Our collective testimony here, today, represents the idea that mobility and safety cannot be experienced as rights in conflict with each other: safe mobility must be guaranteed. The sacrifice of the 23 victims of the train disaster must lead us to maintain a daily commitment to the need for safe transport.

We all know that there is no relief for the pain of the victims' families, including we know how many, that terrible morning, they were traveling on those trains and were lucky enough to escape, since then they have lived with a very profound trauma.

together with the mayors of the communities involved, we want to honor the memory of the 23 victims, support their families and the survivors of that tragic train accident, because the only way to ease the pain is to get justice. And in the search for truth and justice, we will always be at the families' side.

What happened eight years ago remains an open wound for our communities: this is why we imagined that our affection and pain could be transformed into a visible gesture right here in this square which could host a work in memory of the victims: we will ask the Academy of Fine Arts to involve its students in a competition of ideas for the creation of a stele or a monument. It could be a way to do not forget that tragedy and invoke the utmost attention from those with government responsibilities."
