Bari. Construction has started for the construction of the first section of the cycle path on the Lorusso seafront in Palese

The intervention, whose works are expected to last 65 weeks, is part of the broader redevelopment of the Palese and Santo Spirito seafront and is functional to connecting the two neighborhoods north of the city with San Girolamo and Giovinazzo.

Bari. Construction has started for the construction of the first section of the cycle path on the Lorusso seafront in Palese.

Yesterday morning the councilor for public works Nicola Mele and the president of the Municipality V Vincenzo Brandi they went to Palese, in Strada Pizzillo, on the occasion of the start of the construction site for the construction of the first section of the cycle path on the Lorusso seafront, which is part of the wider route of the Adriatic cycle path in the territory of Municipality V.

The intervention concerns the first 500 meters of the cycle route between Strada Cola di Cagno and Strada Pizzillo. The runway, to be built on its own site on the existing pavement which will therefore be redeveloped and expanded, will be 2,2 kilometers long in total and will connect the port of Palese with the Cola di Cagno road. The paving chosen for the cycle route will be made with draining and eco-compatible material (of the soil seed or architectural concrete type); the color identified for the finish is sand yellow.

"With the setting up of the base camp – explained Nicola Mele -, work began today on the Palese seafront. The intervention, for a total amount of 2 million euros, is financed by the PNRR, will design a new face for the waterfront, reducing the driveway lane to one, creating a two-way cycle path at sidewalk level which will also be redeveloped and widened in some areas. Furthermore, approximately fifty more parking spaces will be made available and the sewage sections will be cleaned and made efficient. The works will start on the stretch of seafront between the Pizzillo and Cola di Cagno streets and will then be interrupted in conjunction with the summer period to resume in September.

The intervention is an integral part of a larger project than with one cycle/pedestrian path that will connect the city of Giovinazzo with the north-west area of the city of Bari, through the Santo Spirito waterfront already underway, the connection between the marinas between Santo Spirito and Palese up to the Baraccone road.

The entire project, therefore, constitutes a strengthening not only the usability and accessibility of the entire coast but also the connection between two valuable areas, such as the "Baia di Palese" and the small port of Santo Spirito, promoting the connection between the two urban entities through soft mobility routes, increasing and benefiting interactions in order to facilitate social, economic and interpersonal relationships".

“An important intervention is starting today for the territory of Municipality V – continued Vincenzo Brandi – to give all citizens the opportunity to experience the sea better, to walk with your children along the coast and enjoy the beauties of our seaside neighborhoods. In the next few days I will delve into the issues relating to traffic with councilor Mele in order to avoid any possible critical issues".

In detail, the design solution involves the creation of:

· continuous bidirectional cycle path on the sea side, from the intersection of the Palese seafront with via Vittorio Veneto to the intersection with via Cola di Cagno, built in a lane reserved for the sidewalk level for expansion and new construction of the same;

· cycle/pedestrian section at sidewalk level for the last 112 meters of the seafront, before the intersection with via Cola di Cagno;

· promiscuous traffic on via Cola di Cagno;

· one-way traffic for vehicles on the seafront, with different directions converging towards Via Nicola dell'Olio and Via Cola di Cagno for the outflow from the seafront and diverging from Via Vittorio Veneto and Strada Pizzillo for the entrance to the seafront;

· completion of the sidewalk on the mountain side compatibly with the needs of access to front properties.

At the end of the works the intervention will guarantee a continuous and homogeneous cycle path approximately 2,2 km long, the expansion of the pedestrian sections of the sidewalks on the sea side, improving their usability by users also thanks to the planting of new tamarisk trees to create shaded areas, the creation of a continuous loges-type path for blind people about 2,2. km (the largest in the entire municipal territory), the increase in regulatory vehicle parking areas, with approximately 50 additional parking spaces and the overall revaluation of the seafront through the creation of conditions so that citizens and tourists can fully enjoy the landscape of the seafront and not only its function as a link between the areas of the neighbourhood.

To reduce the impact of the construction site on the liveability of the area, a work program was established that guarantees the practicability of the seafront for the entire duration of the intervention also through the establishment of a temporary one-way alternating traffic in the sections with less usable width of the lane.

The construction site will not affect the characteristic architectural elements of the seafront and will focus on the layout of the sidewalks and lanes dedicated to vehicles.

The intervention, whose works are expected to last 65 weeks, is part of the broader redevelopment of the Palese and Santo Spirito seafront and is functional to connecting the two neighborhoods north of the city with San Girolamo and Giovinazzo.

The completion of the Adriatic cycle route in the territory of Municipality V is financed with PNRR M5 C2 funds - investment 4.2.1 - strengthening cycling mobility, for about 2 million euros.
