The Sexmuseum Amsterdam: A Hymn to Love Through New Holograms.
Il Sex Museum Amsterdam, known as The Temple of Venus, is one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands and celebrates the history of sexuality through a journey through cultures and traditions. Founded in 1985, the museum shows how eroticism has been an integral part of human society, from ancient times to the present day, not only as an act of procreation but also as art, spirituality and a form of communication.
Today, thanks to new technologies, the museum offers an unprecedented immersive experience. Holograms, interactive LED displays and digital narrators guide visitors through a visual journey that explores desire and the evolution of erotic expressions. This fusion of past and future makes the sex museum a unique place, where love and sensuality are celebrated as universal and timeless elements.
The museum was opened in 1985. It is one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands.
Modern society claims to be at the forefront of sexual freedom, but history might teach otherwise. In the city of Amsterdam, there is a historical memory of ancient and primordial cultures and practices, gathered to remind us how important the act of love has been in every social context. The museum “The Temple of Venus” (Sexmuseum) stands as a testimony to the enduring presence of sexuality in human history. It reminds us that sex is not a modern phenomenon. The guiding principle of the museum is to observe eroticism through the ages; the mission of the Temple of Venus is to show how sexual traditions have evolved throughout history, from one tradition to another. “The Temple of Venus honors this heritage, demonstrating that sex has not only been a means of procreation, but also an art, a spiritual act and a form of communication.”
Visiting the Sexmuseum in Amsterdam allows tourists to experience how ancient cultures celebrated erotic art and sexuality. The Minoans of Crete created vivid frescoes of entwined lovers, while the Greeks and Romans openly worshipped the deities of love and desire. Even during the European Renaissance, artists such as Titian and Botticelli depicted sensuality with reverence rather than modesty.
The Future of Desire – A Technological Experience
Now, the history of the sex museum and technology collide to create an unprecedented experience. The EW4D team, led by executive producer Joel Solloway along with creatives Najma Bhatti and Yuri Buzzi, has designed four interactive and fascinating attractions that will transport visitors through the evolution of desire in the most immersive way.
In one of the largest high-definition LED displays ever exhibited at the museum, you can take a breathtaking visual journey through the history of pin-ups. It is a stunning mix of animation and exclusive images, which brings these iconic eras to life, making the visitor feel like they have entered a time capsule of seduction.
With holographic illusions, as you progress, you are drawn into the holographic Deep Frame: the history of sexuality unfolds before the eyes of the viewer. Taboos, desires and fantasies materialize in a fascinating fusion of past and future: are they real or just an illusion? Then comes the human hologram: here you come face to face with a powerful lifelike holographic figure, who embodies the transformative and liberating essence of sexuality. As you get closer, you feel the energy, and you can embrace the colors and emotions emanating from the human digital performance: a sensory experience like never before.
Holographic narrators then guide the visitor through the museum’s most intriguing secrets, bringing to life stories of passion, repression and freedom.
The universal and timeless nature
Sensuality is not a contemporary construct; it is part of the human heritage. In some contexts, such as the Victorian era, there was rigid sexual repression, yet underground erotic literature, such as the works of the Marquis de Sade, or “My Secret Life,” flourished. Even in cultures where sexual expression was limited, people found ways to explore and express desire, proving that eroticism is a persistent and irrepressible force in human history.
Eroticism, sensuality, and love defy rigid gender classifications and are instead deeply personal and fluid expressions of human emotion. They cannot be confined to a singular definition or aesthetic; rather, they manifest differently for each individual. Love and desire are universal yet unique experiences, shaped by personal feelings, perspectives, and identities.
This is the Sexmuseum, where the founders have created a safe, engaging and educational space that illuminates the universal and timeless nature of eroticism.
