The museum participates in BookCity Milano 2023 with meetings dedicated to dreams as a driver of socio-cultural changes

Milano 15 November 2023. From November 15th to 19th, the National Science and Technology Museum participates in the twelfth edition of Book City Milano, the event promoted by the Culture Department of the Municipality of Milano and the BookCity Association Milano established by the Corriere della Sera Foundation, Foundation Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, Umberto and Elisabetta Mauri Foundation and Arnoldo and Alberto Mondadori Foundation and by AIE.

For four days, in the spaces of the Museum, presentations and dialogues will alternate with some of the protagonists of the Italian literary scene, to address from different points of view the theme of the twelfth edition of the event dedicated to books and reading: the time of the dream.

The "Dream" runs through the entire history of humanity, touching every single individual, protagonist or spectator, direct or indirect witness of important episodes or crucial historical-cultural paths. This is the key to the "Dream" with which the Museum promotes its meetings. From the dream of scientific and medical progress, starting from the early 700th century, to the dream of conquering new exotic destinations, such as the Arctic; from the dream of a "female" science, which today sees the light also thanks to the spread of STEM subjects, to the dream of moving and breathing underwater, as well as flying; from the dream of a more just and empathetic society, professed with the strength and courage of choices, to the dream of freedom of expression, which flows along the wires of the radio.

The event begins at the Museum Thursday 16 November at 19pm with the Sognando il futuro event. Science and technology help us imagine the future we want to build.
Of all the dreams, the one that concerns the future is perhaps at the same time the most beautiful and the most disturbing, but it has a unique characteristic: dreaming of the future means starting to build it, because our future also depends on how we do it today, all together as a society, we want it to be. This is why we must be clear about the most important challenges and opportunities. Among these are those that concern our health, how we should take care of it in a changing climate, but also what technology can offer us, for example, from the point of view of new materials, and how all this could, who knows, lead us increasingly towards places outside our planet. They'll talk about it Nicola Montano, Doctor, Professor of Internal Medicine University of Milano, Director of the Internal Medicine Complex - Immunology and Allergology at the Polyclinic of Milano, deals with cardioneuroscience, clinical appropriateness and environmental impact, Maria Rescigno, Professor of General Pathology and Pro-Rector of Research at Humanitas University, Head of the Mucosal Immunology and Microbiota laboratory of the IRCCS Humanitas Clinical Institute, will talk to us about how the study and research on macrobiota can change the way of thinking about medicine in the future, Francesco Stellacci, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, previously at MIT in Boston, recipient of many international awards, will talk to us about how materials engineering can help us imagine a more sustainable future, Roberto Vittori, Astronaut, test pilot and Air Force general, was the first European astronaut to command the Soyuz and space attaché for Italy in Washington.
To lead the evening Barbara Gallavotti, scientific journalist, writer and RAI author.
Introduced Paola Dubini, Bookcity Steering Committee Milano and Vice President National Museum of Science and Technology, e Fiorenzo Marco Galli, Director General of the National Science and Technology Museum.
The evening will be enlivened by musical accompaniment by Modern Physics.
An event promoted by BookCity Milano and National Science and Technology Museum, in collaboration with Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Humanitas University, University of Milano and Polyclinic of Milano.

Naturalists, doctors, medicine and consultations in early 700th century Italy
With Manuela Sanna, Dario Generali, Francesco Luzzini, Benedino Gemelli, Stefano Spataro
Starting from the seventeenth century, many doctors and naturalists espoused the principles of the new science with conviction. For the natural sciences and anatomy, the new methods led to significant results and to clearly defining new and effective epistemological statutes. In other contexts, such as, for example, practical medicine, the new scientific approach did not show appreciable progress compared to traditional therapies and pharmacopoeias, which modern doctors also had to continue to deal with.
It is discussed in the book: Writings published in «La Galleria di Minerva», edited by Stefano Spataro, published by Olschki, 2023.
The consultations of Ludovico Pacino Viti (1662-1732) and other doctors of his time, edited by Benedino Gemelli, Angeli editore, 2022.

18.30 pm, Sala Biancamano, entrance Via Olona 6/bis
The Red Tent by Umberto Nobile: its history and its restoration
With Marco Iezzi, Stefano Twardzik, Leonardo Gariboldi, Andrea Moroni
Having completed the restoration of the Red Tent, which offered shelter to Umberto Nobile and the survivors of the Arctic expedition of 1928, the Museum presents, with Edizioni Ca' Foscari, a volume that highlights the complexity of the intervention and the history of this icon. Since its return to Italy, the Red Tent took on a highly symbolic value, which the various essays contextualize historically. Since 1952 the red tent has been preserved in the Museum, in storage by the Civic Historical Collections | Museum of the Risorgimento of the Municipality of Milano, and is now accessible to the public again in the Studio Collections. The publication is freely accessible in Open Access format

At the end of the presentation, the curator Trasporti Marco Iezzi will accompany the public through the Museum's study collections, on a special guided tour of the Red Tent.
It is discussed in the book: From the Arctic to Milano. The restoration of the Red Tent at the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci, edited by Marco Iezzi and Giovanni Pietrangeli, with essays by Stefano Morosini and Stefano Twardzik, Leonardo Gariboldi, Patrizia Pampana, Andrea Moroni, Francesca Tramma, Samuel Antichi, Cinzia Oliva, published by Edizioni Ca' Foscari, 2023.

Two women, two scientists, one universe
With Amalia Ercoli Finzi, Elvina Finzi, Marta Meli.
Amalia Ercoli Finzi, the first woman to graduate in Italy in aeronautical engineering, has made science and female empowerment a family affair: her daughter Elvina Finzi is also an engineer and has a doctorate. Together they promote STEM subjects and their diffusion among boys and girls. Together they also wrote their latest book, You are a universe: why today we are witnessing the conquest of space and technology by girls. And to establish yourself in these sectors, as the authors tell us, you need self-esteem, preparation, ambition, the ability to collaborate, three essential elements and a strong spirit of initiative.
It is discussed in the book: You are a universe, by Amalia Ercoli Finzi and Elvina Finzi, published by Mondadori, 2023.

16.30 pm, Sala Biancamano, entrance Via Olona 6/bis
Underwater man from the Ancients to Leonardo da Vinci
With Claudio Giorgione, Rossella Paternò
Breathing, working and moving underwater, as well as flying, has always been a human dream. Whether for military or civil purposes, in the 15th century this theme was addressed at a European level by a very high number of humanists and engineers, as evidenced by the beautiful drawings contained in the manuscripts, some of which are practically unpublished, preserved in the Libraries of Europe. Leonardo da Vinci was also fascinated by this theme, dedicating some studies and drawings to it. Thanks to long and complex research, the philological study of the sources and illuminating comparisons, the volume reconstructs the illustrated catalog of drawings dedicated to underwater work in fifteenth-century manuscripts.
It is discussed in the book: The underwater man in the fifteenth century manuscripts by Rossella Paternò and Faustolo Rambelli, published by La Mandragora, 2022.

18 pm, Sala Biancamano, entrance Via Olona 6/bis
Guido Ucelli di Nemi and Carla Tosi, a life on the right side
With Fiorenzo Marco Galli, Pia Majno Ucelli, Giovanna Majno, Sergio Harari, Ugo Savoia
It is the story of the life of Guido Ucelli of Nemi, a great visionary entrepreneur who linked his name to the recovery of Caligula's ships and the foundation of the Museum of Science and Technology (then Tecnica), and his wife Carla Tosi, daughter of Franco Tosi, a metalworker industrialist from Legnano, who after 1938, but especially after 1943, challenged the republicans and the SS to help their Jewish friends hide, change their name or escape abroad. And they paid the consequences heavily: arrested by the Germans, they ended up in San Vittore as political prisoners and threatened with shooting. Furthermore, the SS command decided to deport Carla Tosi to a German concentration camp. Her family managed to free her shortly before she crossed the border. This is also the story of the Maddalena Cloisters in via Cappuccio 7, a former convent that has seen centuries of Milanese life pass by. All worthy of being told.
It is discussed in the book: On the right side by Ugo Savoia, published by Neri Pozza, 2023.

19pm, Sala Cenacolo, entrance Via San Vittore 21

During the presentation these themes will be addressed, from the birth of free radio to today.
Followed by a guided tour of the Radio Broadcasting exhibition.
It's talked about in the book: THE RADIO DREAMERS Extraordinary stories and characters from the radio by Paolo Lunghi, Mavi editore, 2022.
