Rete 4 remembers the tragedy of San Giuliano di Puglia

With an unpublished documentary edited by Andrea Broglia

Rete 4 remembers the tragedy of San Giuliano di Puglia.

It was the 31 October 2002. At 11.32, one violent earthquake shock causes the roof of part of the school building to collapse “Francesco Jovine”, a San Giuliano di Puglia (CB).

They remain in the building, which included a nursery, elementary and middle school 57 children trapped under the rubble, 8 teachers e 2 janitors: 27 children and a teacher lose their lives.

Exactly 20 years later, the network directed by Sebastiano Lombardi remembers the dramatic event with the documentary «Trauma – The tragedy of San Giuliano di Puglia», broadcast for the first time today in the late evening.

Curated by Andrea Broglia, to MNEO – Italian Memory Archive, "Trauma" chronicles the consequences of the 2002 earthquake in the Molise municipality, and then delves into the dark world of the wounds suffered by the entire community.

Initially the narrative is more excited, with mostly unpublished archive images, and then more dilated, to give space to the victims and those struggling to reduce the impact of the shocks suffered.

Meticulous and patient work, thanks to which many people who had never wanted to speak opened up in front of the cameras. A long journey completed around Italy, including in the places where most of the surviving boys went to live.

Among the voices collected, those of parents who have lost their children; of some of the boys and one of the teachers extracted alive from under the rubble; of the firefighters and volunteers who served; of the parents and sisters of the young survivors; of the former principal of “Francesco Jovine”; of a traffic policeman; of a priest; of the president of the San Giuliano Victims Committee; of a local journalist, who has followed the whole story up to the present day; of the psychotherapists who intervened on several occasions.

Above all the voices, the warning of the citizens of San Giuliano emerges: the State, the local authorities, invest in the safety of schools, also and above all thanks to the resources of the Pnrr.
