Spinea: Tragedy narrowly avoided on the railway line between Mestre and Castelfranco Veneto

In Spinea (VE) it was Tragedy on the tracks narrowly avoided of the railway line connecting Mestre to Castelfranco Veneto. The Operations Room of the Venice Police Headquarters, received a report of a vehicle stuck on the railway line, between the barriers of the level crossing on Via Asseggiano, in Spinea, sent a patrol to the scene and immediately shared the information with the Compartmental Operations Centre of the Railway Police for Veneto. The operator on duty identified the railway line involved and at the same time contacted the Railway Traffic Coordinator of the RFI company asking the instantaneous blocking of traffic on the Mestre – Castelfranco railway line.

The Railway Traffic Control Room has the planned emergency procedures were immediately activated, however informing the Railway Police that in the Spinea area the passage of 2 regional trains was imminent, travelling in opposite directions to each other. They were moments of absolute apprehension, considering that trains travel on average at a speed of 120 km/h and that to stop at such a speed they need a space of approximately 1 km; the first train, in fact, stopped a few meters from the vehicle stuck on the tracks. A patrol car from the Venice Police Headquarters and a patrol from the Mestre Railway Police Section intervened on site to carry out the necessary investigations.

The incident ended positively, with no damage to people or things., but it is worth highlighting that recently there has been an increase in incidents of failure to comply with the rules governing crossing level crossings, both by pedestrians and motorists and which, unfortunately, in some cases, result in tragic outcomes. In fact, it dates back to last month the accident on the Mestre – Portogruaro line, when a motor vehicle got trapped between the barriers of the level crossing. In that case the occupants of the vehicle managed to move away from the railway line, but the impact of both trains with the car was unavoidable.

A couple of days later, a similar event once again affected the level crossing on Via Asseggiano: a car made a wrong turn and got stuck on the tracks. The event occurred at night and the reduced flow of rail traffic allowed traffic to be blocked in time. Often even pedestrians, not fully aware of the great danger they face, finding the level crossing barriers lowered, decide to cross the railway line anyway and in some cases end up being the victims of a collision.

The Railway Police raises awareness among citizens about the serious dangers that arise if the regulations and laws in force are not observed.; in this perspective, in recent years, it has further intensified its awareness and prevention services both in the yards and in the vicinity of level crossings, also employing personnel in civilian clothes and implementing days dedicated to specific services aimed at countering incorrect behaviour in terms of railway safety.

At the same time, through specially trained operators, Railway Police spreads the “Train to be cool” project in schools (promoted by the Railway Police Service with the collaboration of the MIUR and with the scientific support of the Faculty of Psychology of the Sapienza University of Rome), an educational campaign aimed at students, which aims to raise awareness among young people regarding correct and legal behavior, to be observed in particular in the railway sector.

Over the years, there have been numerous meetings in various schools in the provinces of Venice, Treviso, Rovigo and Belluno.: training meetings, which continue to this day, during which the Railway Police operators focus more on the behaviors to avoid, because they are particularly risky for safety and personal security.
