Greater safety on the roads of Veneto: protocol signed for advanced video surveillance, Zaia: “Veneto, a safety laboratory”

La Veneto Region and the Ministry of the Interior have signed an innovative protocol to improve road safety and fight crime. With a initial investment of 3 million euros, up to 350 new intelligent cameras will be installed on roads and highways, monitoring over a million vehicles per day. President Zaia underlines the importance of the project, which uses funds seized from criminals to ensure greater protection for citizens, also in view of the Olympics Milano-Cortina 2026.

Più sicurezza sulle strade del Veneto: firmato protocollo per videosorveglianza avanzata, Zaia: “Veneto laboratorio di sicurezza”"Citizen safety is a primary asset and Veneto is a laboratory in this area too. The protocol signed today is the first of its kind at a national level which, with an initial three million euros allocated by the Ministry of the Interior, allows for the incentive of territorial control with up to 350 additional new cameras, positioned at strategic points of road and motorway infrastructures. Taking advantage of our road network we will be able to monitor the million vehicles that pass through regional borders every day. They will be intelligent cameras capable of reading license plates and other characteristics of vehicles, identifying in real time those reported to the Police and sending alerts to the headquarters. In such a context, the effectiveness of actions to track down wanted criminals is multiplied exponentially.“. This the comment by the President of the Region, Luca Zaia, following the signing of the memorandum of understanding on security matters together with the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, the Prefect of Venice, Darco Pellos (as a representative of all Venetian colleagues), thethe general manager of Veneto Strade spa, Giuseppe Franco, the president of CAV spa, Monica Manto. Present were all the prefects and police commissioners of the region, the Chief of Police, Vittorio Pisani, numerous representatives of the Police Forces, the Armed Forces and the Fire Brigade as well as the Regional Council.

The cameras will give body to 42 new video surveillance systems on regional, municipal and provincial roads and another 16 between toll booths and along motorways with a total coverage of approximately 2.000 kilometres of strategic arteries.

"The goal is to strengthen the control of the territory, I thank Minister Piantendosi and all the signatories of the document for this project that we have put on the table together – continues the Governor -. An initiative that has a significant philosophy already in the use of money. The funding, in fact, comes from a special fund of the Ministry composed of resources seized from crime and that now go to be invested in the protection of the territory and in the fight against crime. Veneto is already one of the safest regions in Italy and we want it to remain so; for this reason we are putting in place all possible synergies. In this context, a primary role is played by the use of video surveillance tools and modern technologies, both as a deterrent with the strengthening of the control system and as a tool to facilitate investigations that lead to the capture of protagonists of illegal actions against the heritage of other nature to the detriment of citizens".

Un last note, President Zaia dedicated it to the Olympics Milano Cortina 2026: "In less than a year, the great sporting event will become a reality. We will be under the eyes of the world and we expect a large number of fans in our region, estimated at around 2 million people. We have the duty to guarantee maximum security in the centers but also along the main communication routes. This project identifies the nerve centers where the devices allow 24-hour monitoring to intervene promptly in the event of any emergency or crime.".
